Newborn sleepwear in winter?

Hi, I have a 2.5 week old baby. He sleeps in his cot in my room at night.
During the day I dress him in a long sleeve vest, baby grow, thick wooly jumper and he naps in a thin fleecy blanket. He seems happy, warm and content.
At night, I take off the jumper and add an extra thin blanket. He doesn't seem as content as during the day and wakes every hour. He also hates being swaddled.
For comparison, I sleep under 2 duvets, a long sleeve thin fleece and a long sleeve t shirt.
I know that they say you are supposed to only put your baby in a vest and baby grow followed by a blanket because of SIDS but is that the case all year round? I would have thought it makes sense to be wearing the same number of layers as me.

Firstly, how warm's your room? About 18 degrees C is perfect for a baby (and for adults too). At this temperature, you'll need your baby to be in a vest (I doubt it really matters whether it has sleeves or not) a sleepsuit and a blanket. It does feel chilly at the moment and I'd probably fold the blanket in two to give two layers.
How big is your baby? If he's not a tiddler, you can get sleeping bags that are OK to use for newborns. These are great because they can't be kicked off. It's worth giving them a quick google. Bear in mind that many aren't suitable for use until 3 months. The most important thing is to be sure that the baby's head can't disappear into the neck hole - that's why it's about size as well as age. At this time of the year, you'll need a 2.5 tog bag. If it's very cold, I drape a cotton blanket over the top too, but that's because I don't have any heating on in the bedroom.
Remember too that your baby still doesn't have a day/night routine. His poor sleeping during the night might be completely unrelated to feeling warm or cold, simply that he's yet to know the difference between day and night. Does he feel warm? Don't try his hands or feet - these often feel cold in babies. Try the back of his neck or his chest. If these feel nicely warm, chances are he feels snug too.
I know it's tempting to think that he needs as many layers as you. He doesn't. I find it amazing that my baby sleeps in a 2.5 tog sleeping bag whereas I'm under a 13.5 tog duvet! But it's important that they don't overheat as you know."Growth for growth's sake is the ideology of the cancer cell" - Edward Abbey.0 -
I opened the thread and was going to suggest the baby sleeping bags as chris suggests above. My daughter (4 months) wears a baby vest, sleepsuit and sleeping bag at night and seems happy.0

My room is 18-20c and my newborn is in a vest, baby grow and blanket (which he instantly kicks off!). I would guess you baby has not worked out day and night yet. If this is your 1st like me you are prob trying very hard to avoid noise day or night. Don't daytime noise is good it will help them adjust. Now I have a second and no choise but lots of noise my baby has very quickly settled into a day/night routine.0

When our dd was newborn, we'd generally keep the room around 18 degrees. She slept in a short sleeve vest, sleep suit, single sheet, and 2 layers of cellular blanket. (This is going by e recommendations in the Mothercare catalogue)
Now she is bigger she is in a vest, sleep suit and Grobag sleeping bag. I understand you can use grobags from when they are around 10lbs. It has the recommended layers to have on the back of the packaging.0 -
Oh, and congratulations by the way!0

Mine was never happy at the recommended temperatures. He always liked to be slightly warmer, he didn't sleep though so I could keep an eye on him most of the night.
He still likes to be toasty warm or he complains loudly.
We do long sleeved vest, babygrow or pjs and 2.5 tog sleeping bag, in 20 -22 degrees. The frontier is never somewhere else. And no stockades can keep the midnight out.0 -

My son was born in November and we did exactly as above. Worked well for him. Later on when he went into his own room he had gro bags and we are still in them now. Love them!0 -
Mine has/had.. a vest, usually long sleeved, a sleepsuit, a fleece sleepsuit and 4 fleece blankets folded in half and a cot quilt folded in half and she still wakes up freezing.
If baby is unsettled just add another blanket. they are guidelines not laws you do what is best for your child books are for advice and ugidance and are not comparable to your experience and families circumstances.LB moment 10/06 Debt Free date 6/6/14Hope to be debt free until the day I dieMortgage-free Wannabee (05/08/30)6/6/14 £72,454.65 (5.65% int.)08/12/2023 £33602.00 (4.81% int.)0 -

Congrats on your baby boy :j
If you're swapping his thick woolly jumper for a thin fleece at night he's too cold, presumably your heating is off at night aswell?
I was always told baby needs to have the same amount of layers as l am wearing and only one extra if l thought he needed it.
Those growbags are brilliant, check the tog rating of course. For snowy nights l would double fold a woven blanket place it upto his chest and tuck it in around the sides and bottom.
I would say your little one needs an extra layer or two, don't worry he won't settle if he's too hot either. Mine came home in the height of summer and l had too warm on the first night.
Happy moneysaving all.0
