Microsoft tested a range of computers to determine their power consumption and the average was about 50w; with the monitor approx the same. Laptops and LCD screens much less.

It should only cost a couple of pounds a month to run a PC.

What is your useage of the combi washer/dryer?
The dryer will use a significant amount of electricity.
Try drying over the bath on a drying stand if practical.

Leaving lights on and equipment on standby also adds up over the month.
A PC would be the equivalent of around a 300W light bulb. If you have an old CRT type monitor then its higher. Turn that off when not in use.

    Try this two week test:
Choose a day and time and read your meter. Then keep your electric usage as it is for 1 week.
Read the meter on the same day and at the same time a week later. Now start reducing your electric useage by turning things off and reducing dryer useage if practical. At the end of the next week read the meter again.

Do the sums and you should get a rough idea of the savings that can be made.

We pay 90 a month for both gas & elec. This is for a 2 up 2 down mid terrace with 2 adults and 2 children. We have GSH and one of those "living flame" gas fires.Ours is a combi boiler so we have no immersion heater. The cooker is electric though and the washing machine seems to be on permanently.

I think our bills are a little excessive and wonder what is involved in getting the meters checked out.

    Roger56,
While I agreewith the thrust of your post, I would make a couple of comments.
Firstly equipment on standby will use a negligble amount of electricity - typically 1-2w so will use a few pence per year(there was a thread on this some while ago)

Secondly both of my desktop computers use less than 100w each with the monitor switched on(one is a 17" CRT, the other a 19" TFT) - see post above.

PC on standby I agree, my wording wasn't to good there.
PC operating the 300W is typical of a CRT monitor and base unit on.

    Hi

I don't think the PC uses such a lot of leccy. We have 2, now on broadband, so they're both on quite a lot. By contrast, we don't watch TV very much and we always switch off the 'standby' on TV.

We cook by leccy and we pay £14 a month to GreenEnergy. Gas central heating costs £30 a month. We do regularly check to see where we can get cheaper - have had people trying very strongly to sell us Staywarm because it's supposed to be 'for' older people, but on doing the sums I've never seen any benefit in it.

This is a 2-bedroom bungalow, 2 people, we both have a daily shower, use washing-machine twice a week, fridge-freezer, all 'A' rated. The place is insulated and double-glazed.

  • We have a 5 bed house plus a separate annexe with its own boiler and use about 11000 kwh of electricity and 80000 kwh of gas a year, cost is around £200 per month. Lets put it this way, I love standing charges, I love tier 2.
Unless it is damaged or discontinued - ignore any discount of over 25%
  • 4 bed detached, family of 3, £50 a month combined gas & electricity. Was in credit last time I checked - but she does like to use the dryer..............:( Scottish Power Online.

Other women want a boob job. Honey the only silicone i'm interested in is on a 12 cup muffin tray, preferably shaped like little hearts
  • we have a 3 bed house in bath.

We pay scottish Power £62 per month, this includes deductions for paying by DD and not receiving a paper bill. This is also a capped rate from last year.

    It's roughly £30 on each.
    nothing.
