While the response time is certainly a major factor in how FPS works I don't think you're right about that being the reason why Faster is in the name. It is in fact in reference to payments being processed more speedily than they were by BACS, as you can see in the wikipedia description, which ties in very much with my understanding when I was developing FPS processing for one of the original members back in 2007/8.

UPDATE
I just tried to do another FB from my Halifax bank account to my Santander account. Still getting the following:
"Unfortunately your payment won't go through immediately as a Faster Payment. Please only continue if you're happy for this payment to be processed the next working day".Trinidad - I have a number of needs. Don't shoot me down if i get something wrong!!0 -

My wages have not gone in the bank today but direct debits have come out (taking me over my overdraft) . Checked with Halifax and the chappie I spoke to told me they had not had any other complaints or enquiries about it!! Spoke to the sending bank and they have been told by LLoyds not to resend payments but to just leave them as they should go through on ther own.Wins
