The recieving party won't but the networks can retrieve the data if required.

Not necessarily; we have in-house technology with one of our companies that as part of the system, allows us to check the number even if it's been withheld.

This system was about £20k installed, however as part of a full package, it's worth it for the industry. I do understand that the general public won't have it, though.

ETA: This was after a few youths (as it now turns out) were booking taxis from the local airport into London/other airports, at a minimum of £80 a go, and I wasn't willing to pay out the companys pocket any longer. The parents were forced in court to pay the company every penny they'd spent, as it turns out the kids had a personal vendetta against the previous owners (we bought the company out of administration).

The total bill in lost jobs over a 4 month period was nearly £30k, and the new system, although it cost a fortune to set up, does stop this happening, and also saves a lot of admin work. For this investment, plus £1 to buy the company, it's currently on the market, 18 months later, for around £500k, so it really was worth it!

Agree that the circumstances were exceptional in my case, but they still managed to block the number from calling me, even if they withheld their number. It certainly was not a case of "can you block this number for me please?", however they will investigate it if malicious and can block them if its a problem.

Some inaccurate answers posted above; in basic terms the number is sent in two forms. The caller ID; which can be blocked and/or spoofed; and for routing purposes which can be displayed if you have the right equipment - think emergency services or security.

As mentioned above its also possible to obtain the number after the call.
