Im glad that you have found a starting point for getting some advice and I am truely sorry that your request has been bludgeoned by another spate of bickering on here.

Clearly whether you are deal with a firm from a distance or face to face, it is important that you trust and understand your adviser when they are trying to help. If you do not get this feeling or come away with more questions than when you went in with then it is always good practice to get a 2nd opinion.

Thats ok. No experience of them one way or another.

Conrad makes a very valid point - do you want to deal with an experienced mortgage broker/financial adviser, or a newly recruited philosophy graduate who has been trained how to use their own company's in house research software?

moneysupermarket.com (free!) compares 8500 products in a few minutes. When you see your advisor, ask him/her how many he/she is selecting from. I guess what I'm saying is, when you have seen the advisor/broker, check the website just in case there is a better product for you. Or have a quick look first, and perhaps ask about some of the products that you have found to be available. Once you have decided, you may get a better/quicker service by using the advisor, if the mortgage provider has a relationship with the advisor.

Good luck, and keep asking for advice/experience, both here and your friends/family - I'm sure they will all be keen to help.

Exactly the same as any true whole of market broker does, and it will not show intermediary only exclusives, thus not giving you the full picture.

Also never forget that Moneysupermarket is actually the UK's largest lead generation resource.

They DO NOT employ their own mortgage advisers merely sell your details to the highest bidder, therefore have no knowledge or quality control systems in place to verify the service standards of the adviser/broker to whom they sell your details.

Don't believe me? Check out their sister company PAA leads, to whom the information is given to sell.

All these so-called free comparison sites are funded somehow, you get nothing for nothing in this world.

Andrew Smith is right about Moneysupermarket. It compares as they say over 8500 deals but last time I looked on trigold the number of deals available was nearer 40000
The other thing is that when you deal online everything is black or white but in reality there are plenty of grey areas that a broker will be able to get through when computer says NO.
I like to give people as many choices as possible to do what I want them to. (Milton H Erickson I think)

Moneysupermarket.com phoned me the other day offering me leads. I turned them down as I dont use paid for leads. I am going to assume that they take details from people entering their info on the website and try and sell them to IFAs.

Yep thats what they do D. When I first started out a couple of years ago I bought some from PAA leads at £40 a lead approx - I didnt convert any of them

    for example I got

2 x long term unemployed wanting to remortgage for about 300k
1 x immigrant who did not even have rights to reside
1 x 16 year old wanting to buy a buy to let

etc etc etc - lets put it this way it cost me £400 and I never went back for more! I can understand why advisers go to them when they dont have existing client banks, but if there are any trainees or newly qual'ds reading this, don't do it - its a mistake!
