Barclays basic account.

My partner has been BR for three months now and feels he needs to open a basic bank account,we have an appointment with barclays tomorrow. What i am unsure of is will he be ok to open an a account with them as they are one of his creditors through barclaycard.
When i booked the appointment i didn't say that he was BR as it was very busy, will this be ok ? and what will he need to take in regard to the bancruptcy.
Thanksin advance.

  • Let us know how you get on. Barclays are one of my creditors in BR. If I wasn't able to open a Coop account I would of been stuffed!!

I have been curious of late as to whether Barclays would let me open an account whilst undischarged?:p

    re-Barclays?

I believe they will allow an undischarged BR to open a basic account.........regardless of whether Barclays were creditors in the BR.
No, I don't think all other drivers are idiots......but some are determined to change my mind.......

  • you wont however for some stupid reason be allowed to use any of the online bits of barclays banking till your discharged from bankruptcy...they freeze those bits till then so you cant access them

I have a basic account and savings account with Barclays who were one of my br creditors. Both accounts were opened after I was discharged. I needed to take in proof of discharge before I could get internet access. They have dealt with me in a very polite and professional manner. Good luck.

    Ummm (that's me thinking);)

I'm grateful that Co-op have given me, and are letting me keep my basic account post BR, but, their on-line banking facility is just awful.

Now, when I was with Barclays before they froze my account (something to do with me owing them lots of money:p), I thought their on-line banking facilities where excellent - but if I go back to them and they grant me a basic account, I can't use those facilities until officially discharged! Pfwaa. What to do?

Ho hum, I'll just stick with Co-op for 12 months until I'm auto discharged.

  • Well that's just great. Now what do I do?

Just had a letter from Coop bank. Because of my Br, they're now closing my account in 30 days! I mean !!!!!!? I was assured by the staff in my local branch that everything would be OK. Well thanks Coop. Thanks a lot.

I have just finished sorting all of my direct debits and standing orders and now this.

I'm off into the city now to talk to Barclays (they were a creditor in my BR). If they can't help me then I don't know what to do.

Any help would be really grateful now MSE. Christ, what a mess.

    oh no Grumpy,

were you a co-op customer before you went bankrupt or did you open it after you went to court? if it isnt the latter it will effect an awful lot of people myself included.

  • Oh no :( I always thoght co-op would be ok with you being bankrupt. You got me worried now as I also have a co-op account. It has been open a good 6 months though. How long have you had yours?

You can use Barclays online banking, but only if you opened account before going BR. I have just opened one and got set up for online banking too. They guy at the branch said it all had to be set up before going BR as it couldn't be done after. You should be fine to open the account but don't think you will get online banking though.
I looked into the Co op account, but they told me they do not accept undischarged Bankrupts anymore and i should ring back when i have been discharged!
