I work for one of the Big 4 and I can tell you these things are so much cheaper - won't include meat things as the OP is a veggie:
. Fruit n Veg
. Cereals
. Bread - love the 6 part baked wholemeal rolls 69p for 6 in Aldi
. Biscuits - got 2x200g of Aldi's Biscuits for Cheese for 89p each and Sainsburys is £2.99 for 500g!
. Yoghurts
. Cheese
. Snacks
. Rice/Pasta/Cous Cous
. Cleaning materials - Aldi's washing up liquid came top on a Which survey0 -
Think it depends on the location of the stores and if you need to buy more than basics. Aldi is OK for basics but there are a lot of things they don't stock and I've often found the things they do stock arent always the best quality (nuts & bread that are stale, fruit & veg that rots after a couple of days, washing powder that causes me to come out in a rash etc.)
I buy the majority of my groceries from Asda as its nearest and only pick up the odd thing from Aldi if I'm passing at any time. Sometimes the odd few pence saving isnt worth the £5 petrol it would cost me to go there.0 -

Might be sometihng in the powder or your allergic to Washing Powder in general but its still good.
The fruit is good, depends how you store it really and if you bought the fruit from the previous as opposed to what was delivered the morning of your shop. I agree on the bread though, thought it was just me, I find if I get a loaf of hovis or braces then its fine.0 -
Aldi wine is great :beer:0

The fruit & veg selection at LIDL is always worth a look. I picked up 7 really nice, large juicy oranges for £1 last week. I also shop at the market but even they couldn't match that, on quality at least...
Red Kidney beans - 18p
Baked beans - 33p
Chopped or plum tomatoes - 31p
Rowan Hill Bakery "luxury" wholemeal loaf (nicer than Hovis...) 85p
You can find the last four items at those prices in Sainsbury's basics range, but Lidl beats them for quality.0 -
I hope this is the correct thread but if not, I'm sure it'll be moved
I've started buying Lidl's cat litter, £1.79 for 10kg as against 1.58 for 10 litres in ASDA and Tesco and £1.28 in Sainsbury's for 8l but (before anyone jumps down my throat, that's happened to me before) 10 litres of ordinary cat litter weighs 6kg which is just over 26p a kilo and Lidl is just under 18p.
And some of Lidl's biscuits are made by McVities maybe all but I don't buy any others, their Fruit Shortcake has exactly the same colour wrapper as McV, exactly the same pattern on the biscuits. Lidl's are 45p, McV are over pound except for when they're on offer but they're still nowhere 45p.
Lidl fruit corner yogurts 175g are 35p (20p/100g) or 6 for £1.80 (just over 16.5p/100g) and just as good as Muller, which vary between 120g and 175g (31p/100g - 48p/100g) although ASDA have 4 x 120g for £1 at the moment = 21p/100g.
Just some examples which I've found but I'm sure there must be lots more. The only thing I don't like is some of their prepacked fruit and veg don't have sell by dates which means you might buy a pack of strawberries one day and they will go off by bthe next day - this has happened to me and I contacted Lidl and got a £10 voucher in the post :smileyheaTake nothing but pictures, kill nothing but time, leave nothing but footprints to show you came by :smileyhea0 -
I completely agree that Lidl's yogurts are pretty much there with the Brand Names, the greek yogurts are slightly less firm, but good all the same. Shame that my local Lidl rarely seems to have them in stock!
Their cheapest bread is pretty much on par with the cheapest at Sainsbury's and Tesco, priced only about 3p lower.
I put my weekly shopping list into MySupermarket and then print it out, split between Sainsbury's and ASDA. Then I use that to shop at Aldi and Lidl first, to grab things that are cheaper before going off to the major stores for the rest of my shop.0
