Aldi choc digestive biscuits, Oaties biscuits, Jaffa Cakes, wholemeal bread, i feel are all better and cheaper than any of the big supermarkets. Their tinned tomatoes, soy sauce, chilli sauce, are also good. Their Snackrite crisps are £1.99 for a pack of 24 assorted and are the best crisps i've had for years. Their crumpets are 37p per pack of six, French Torchon Ham is £1.49, and their Magnum All in One dishwasher tablets are as good as more expensive ones. You can still get drinkable red white and rose wine at Aldi for £2.99 per bottle too ! I also buy their French beer, £3.29 for 10 stubbies. Frozen fish fingers are 15 for £1.49, my kids love them.

I only go to Asda or Tesco now for stuff i can't get at Aldi, i reckon it saves me about £20 per week shopping there.

Fruit and veg is better. Swirly chocolate spread (lidl) is much nicer then Nutella. I like their mayo in both better than the brand leader as has a less salty taste. Meat is good especially the sanwich fillers and posh ham. Mozarella, feta, creme fresh and cream is all cheaper. The 500g fruit yoghurt is yummy and about 90p. Dearer than basics but much ceaper than supermarket equivlent. Cloudy lemonade. Ginger beer. Washing up liquid. Pasta sauce. Magnum style ice cream. There is so much I buy in these shops I rarely go to the big 4.
There is less to be tempted by when you do Aldi/lidl shops so it works out a lot less for me.

I'm not too sure if it's any good, but Lidl have mixed fruit jam reduced to 29p per jar. I bought 6 jars to add to foodbank donation, mainly because 6 cheap jars will go further than 2 expensive jars, though £1'sh is not that expensive IYSWIM.

    Anyone tried it??

  • Thanks Im going to write down some of these suggestions that I would actually eat and give them a whirl.
Problem is when I've been its always been things like pickled mackrel in jars placed next to a basket of socks etc. Also I thought that there isnt really much to make a meal with that a person would eat who is a vegetarian.

Forgot, but a good line from Aldi is the Torchon ham.

The Aldi Super 6 fruit and veg can offer good value and changes every 2 weeks (generally) on a Sunday. So you can stock up on say the last Friday or Saturday for example and get the new range a day or 2 later.

We pop in to an Aldi or Lidl to see what's worth picking up for a bit less before doing the rest of our weekly shop at Tesco, Sainsbury, Morrison or Asda - not fussy where but we buy quite a lot of own brand value stuff. We're a veggie and a vegan and think it's not easy to shop only in Aldi or Lidl but we usually buy some or most of our fruit and veg for less there, depending on quality on the day as it seems to vary at bit. Some cheaper stuff we buy regularly from Aldi - The Pantry caster sugar, apricots and prunes, almonds, hazelnut and walnuts (extra weight in the pack and good quality), Sweet Harvest tinned tomatoes, kidney beans and pineapple are all tasty, free range eggs, tomato puree, olive oil, some of the herbs and spices, Shepherd Neame and Batemans ales and a few of their wines are marked veggie/vegan on the labels ... high cocoa content plain chocolate is cheaper and yummy too, if you like dark chocolate.

Lynsey, I've bought that jam lots of times it's fine.
  • Only been in Lidls a few times but pasta is good quality about £1/kg and passata only 30something pence, decent thick stuff, not horrible n watery like some.

Also recently picked up some parmigiano-reggiano 9.99 for 850g, which made it wayy cheaper than the supermarket own brand parmesan and far better quality.

For us its a matter off stocking up when we pass.
  • We are a family of 6 and we do our full shop at Aldi.

Prior to that we shopped online at either Tesco or Asda. Our typical weekly spend at Tesco and Asda buying as cheap as possible (no brands) was around £120.00 per week. Full weeks shop at Aldi is around £60.00 per week.

Aprox saving per year is between £2500.00 to £3000.00 per year. It has made a huge difference.
