Lidl and Aldi

Could someone please elaborate on what exactly is cheap at Aldi and Lidl's? (I know the meat is but seeing as Im a vegetarian then I dont buy that.)
Everytime I've been in these supermarkets I think they are more expensive than what I pay shopping around. I usually do my shopping at the market for veg, Home Bargains for toiletries and household items and I get Adsa and Tescos value ranges often.
People bang on about how cheap these places are but I really cant see it.

I buy tortilla wraps from Lidl. They're a lot cheaper than the supermarkets (think about 69p a pack of 6 large wraps).

I also like Lidls tinned tomatoes. Same price as Tesco value but much better quality.

Super 6 fruit and vegetables can rarely be beaten.

If you can stick to the value ranges and find better special offers elsewhere...as I do...then there aren't really any huge savings to be made.

On the other hand...if I allow my partner to do a Tesco shop everything will be the branded variety as she doesn't like the look of any of the Value products but she loves Aldi products even though they are almost the same quality as most value products just with a pretty colorful label and a fake brand name.

Tortilla wraps are 80p for 8...10 pence each at Tesco and KTC tinned tomatoes are 25p a tin at Tesco...cheaper than Aldi/Lidl.

Ah, whenever I've looked at wraps in Tesco they were always over a quid unless on special offer. It's been a while since I've been shopping as I've been housebound.

I find with Lidl that certain things may be a smidge more expensive than supermarket value ranges, but their quality is far superior to even named brands. I can do a full weekly shop in Lidl, at 20% or so less than a big supermarket, and still be sure of getting good quality produce. They sometimes beat the big supermarkets on brands - Hovis Best of Both is £1 in Lidl, but £1.35 elsewhere. Bisto Best gravy granules - £1.89 Lidl, £2.28-2.74 elsewhere. Their fruit and veg lasts longer than the big places, although in general I use the local market for fruit and veg. Their strawberry jam is better than any deluxe stuff I've ever had.

That's another thing...Aldi/Lidl don't deliver and Tesco does so it's perfect if you're housebound...do a shop online selecting all the value ranges...no temptation to get any branded items. Pick a cheap delivery slot and they'll put it all in the kitchen for you. All you have to do is put it all away. Asda is much better for that...if the value range is out of stock they'll replace it with something else at no extra charge.

We're trying to avoid the big 4 as we don't like their practices, so tend to stick with Lidl for most groceries and local producers for meat. (Hubby and DD do the shopping now.)

Totally agree - also because they dont have all the "unnecessary extras" that the bigger supermarkets tempt us with and huge selections of each product, that keeps the cost down. I reckon to spend half what it would cost me in the large supermarkets.

    I totally agree with this.
I do my weekly shop in Lidl, and the quality is much better than (for example) value ranges, but are pretty much on par with value range price stuff.
I find breakfast items (such as bagels, muffins, crumpets) to be much cheaper then the 'Big' supermarkets, and of far better quality.
its like anything, you have to try it out. I wouldnt by their breakfast cereals, as they are smaller packs then normal (£1.29 for coco-rice etc), but i wait until the supermarkets have offers for those things.

Their fruit and veg (i find) lasts about the same as the normal supermarkets, but again they taste much nicer.

And as for the jam......it is the BEST i have ever had!
Their choc chip cookies, are just the same as Maryland, and cost 40p too.
