We are a family of 6 and we do our full shop at Aldi.

Prior to that we shopped online at either Tesco or Asda. Our typical weekly spend at Tesco and Asda buying as cheap as possible (no brands) was around £120.00 per week. Full weeks shop at Aldi is around £60.00 per week.

Aprox saving per year is between £2500.00 to £3000.00 per year. It has made a huge difference.
Lidl and Aldi are cheap but they aren't half the price of the supermarket value lines. Most of the products in Lidl/Aldi are priced within a few pence of the value unbranded product in the major supermarkets.
    :footie:
:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p
  • Right I went today and bought 19 items for £11.13 which I think was reasonable.Remember I am a vegetarian so no meat was bought.
The best buys were as follows, a butternut squash for 49p, orange pop like orangina-big bottle fr 49p,soya milk 59p, big bag of spinach 49p, hot cross buns x 6 75p.
The chopped tomatoes were 45p which is more expensive than Tescos basics which are 31p. Overall I would say that it was good value and that I will be returning.Thanks.

I do then you get more offer promotions in the other main supermarkets but agree the quality of their stock seems better. The Fruit and Veg quality in our local Morrisons has become really poor of late, either poorly stocked or having things go off after a couple of days and having to throw it away. Have found while some of it is a little more expensive in Aldi its also in better condition and lasts.

Though you dont say WHERE you went :) I dont know why people treat Aldi and Lidl as the same stores , they arent , and each have their own good products and different promotions and offers

    .

I went to Aldi. I will be going back within the next couple of weeks and will report on any further bargains then.

We used to spend £100 a week easily in sainsburys. This would be similar (about £80) in tesco. This is more like £60 in morrisons and £40 in lidl! So I do think there is a difference!
If you dont know where you are going... Any road will take you there :rotfl:

Fruit and veg in both stores is better and cheaper than the top 4. I think both do basics lines (cheaper than top 4) but their normal range, slightly dearer than basics but a lot cheaper than branded, is as good quality of not better than branded.
Value baked beans (aldi?) are acceptable and about 28p a can. They certainly work in stew type dishes for bulking up and adding flavour.

I like Aldi's plain chocolate digestives and rich tea biccies. The duck legs in sauce(various) for £2-99 are delicious.Sirloin steak is easily as good as any if you choose properly.German ham at£1-49 is really nice, but I stopped getting the Torchon ham, nice though it is,a few months ago because I noticed that it is formed from selected cuts.I don't like the idea of 'built' meat-just something personal I suppose.
  • I get the branded equivalent of cocopops cereal bars, fruity strings (called ropes there), super six veg, and Disco biscuits (now called Groovy I think) in Aldi for the children's lunch boxes. At Lidl, I regularly get the packs of Croissants as they have fairly long dates on them, mushy peas, fresh herbs, parma ham, brie, cat litter, and the packs of 10 juice cartons.

A dream doesn't become reality through magic; it takes sweat, determination and hard work
  • Not any Aldi nearby but I love Lidl salad cheese, similar to feta and smoked rainbow trout when of offer, parmesan is good priced too
