odowdchr - Can you tell me the names of the bikes you ordered for £120, were they mens/women bikes? Thanks (a link would be nice)0

I'm reading mixed messages here about these bikes - I ordered and they still haven't arrived (despite being told 'within 7 days'). Should I worry? I have called the customer srvices number and there is no answer or answerphone. have I been ripped off?0

I found it was a problem with the courier as opposed to Sterling house. Did you get a tracking number? If you did call the courier, it could be them.  Timberlake Hussy Clique Member No 3  :drool:0 -
One of mine came within 3 days but the other took 2 weeks, due to a supply problem apparently........heres the link eilz...............we bought the deluxe versions by the way which are advertised as 15 gears but are actually 18!http://www.sterlinghouse.co.uk/bogof/bogof200502.aspxA shadowy flight into the dangerous world of a man who does not exist.

I've bought three bikes from them. With two of the orders there was a problem, one my fault, one theirs or their couriers.
On both occasions Sterling House made generous offers which I accepted. All correspondence was carried out via email which they replied to promptly. Their cheap bikes are similar to the budget bikes that catalogues sell at 2-3 times what Sterling House charge.
I will be using them again.0 -
Just been on a 12 mile bike ride on mine and it has literally fell apart. Bought mine from a catologe so paid much more. The exact same one.
When I bought it I took it to my local bike shop to be put together, they told me (in not so many words) that it was a pile of poo.
I just said don't matter I prob wont use it, prob be a 5 minute wonder knowing me.
I've been using it every now and again for a few months but I loved the ride today and would like to know if anyone can give me some sites for a half decent bike. Can't really afford more that £300.
Thanks alot0 -
Chinneybigchops,
You've hit the nail on the head with these bikes, they're cheap, they're ok if you think you'll be using it a couple of times a year, but for a serious cycle, you do need to pay a bit more. I think for a beginner who wants to get into it £300 is about the right level for a new bike (you may be lucky and pick up a decent 2nd hand one for 1/2 that).
What kind of cycling are you hoping to do? Broadly it breaks into 2 groups, road (skinny smooth tyres, drop handlebars) and off road (nobbly fat tyres, straight bars and possibly suspension).
The 2 bikes which spring to mind are the decathlon road bike at £250 (got a lot of good reviews in the roadie mags) or the Claud butler cape wrath (Can be found for £350 or a little less if your lucky) for an off road bike(good component set for the price).
2 things to keep an eye out for:-
- Last years models (2006 models are now available so "last year" is 2005...)
- Avoid full suspension if you're looking at an off road bike, any full suss (as they're known) bike much under £600-£800 makes huge compromises and won't really be as efficient as it should be. (where as a £300 front suspension, or hardtail, works quite well and quite good vaule....)
Some places you may like to go visit....
https://www.singletrackworld.co.uk - a very fast moving forum, mainly aimed at offroad bikes, but the guys there know a lot about bikes in general.
https://www.bikemagic.com - a good off road bike site \ forum
https://www.roadcyclinguk.com - the roadie equivalent of bikemagic
Post back here if you'd like more details about anything.

Thanks so much Evilmonkey, spent ages on here last night looking but as I don't really know much about bikes didn't get very far. I will have a good look at all the info you have given me. I don't really want to rush into anything coz it is quiet alot of money for me and I want something that is going to last me years.
Thanks again you have been a great help to me.0 -
