Free codes for Unlocking Phones OTHER than Nokia's

I have a Sony Ericsson K800i. I know it can only be unlocked via Orange and i was prepared to pay the £20. I have phoned Orange to be told they cannot supply a code as they are having problems getting a code for my phone. My question is are they obliged to supply me with a code to unlock it.

i have a k750i from vodafone they have given me the code to unlock the phone but the procedure does not work.
the procedure give is as follows
sim out
turn on
joystick left
**stick left
there is then no response.
i should be asked network but nothing happens

any one got any advice.

edit:could this be already unlocked as i have just tried my wife T moblile sim and that seems seems fine although i did not make a call.
is there anyway to check.
the phone has been out of contract for 3 months.

Have just bought a cheap LG C2200 T Mobile pre-pay phone but want to use a PAYG Virgin sim card in it, can it be unlocked please?

You should not need to unlock it to use a Virgin SIM. Try it as it should work.

You just have haven't you! I doesn't seem to be locked, so try any SIM in the phone.

Thanks espresso - I'll give it a go and report back. I was concerned about charging it up and trying to use itetc.,
if I couldn't use my Virgin sim immediately. I would probably have taken it back and got a refund with it intact as it were.

You were quite correct espresso, after a minute or so the phone accepted the Virgin PAYG sim card no problem at all, with no need to unlock the phone so all is well, thank you again. :j HM
