    Congratulations continualdiamond!

I was told by my doctors that there is no such thing as a false result.
A 'false negative' means you took the test too early and hormone levels weren't sufficiently elevated when you took the test (you can't always pinpoint the day of ovulation, or conception as this can happen 48 hours after sex), but were by the time the second one was taken.
A 'false positive' means something 'went wrong' between the two tests, ie you were pregnant when the first test was taken and no longer pregnant when the second one was done.

For these reasons they advised against rushing into doing the test too early.
My doctors never did any kind of blood/urine test, just took the results from the ones I'd done.

My advice would be to allow yourselves to be a little bit excited, but not to get too carried away until you are past the 3 months mark.
Everything will be alright in the end so, if it’s not yet alright, it means it’s not yet the end

I didn't have a blood test at docs (went for something else and was tested for pregnancy to 'rule it out' - ha!). Was told at the time that home pregnancy tests are just as accurate as ones they do at the docs. Also, as stated above, false negatives are common before HCG levels are detectable, but false positives are very rare as HCG isn't present if you aren't pregnant. Congratulations!
  • Oh wow ok, so glad I asked now. Thank you everyone.

I actually bought the pregnancy tests from the 99p store this morning, 99p for 3 tests I was happy with, lol. Rather than going into boots or superdrug.

Sounds daft but I had suspected I was, but not because I had any symptoms but because I had no pre period symptoms that I always get a few days before I come on. So whilst I expected no period yesterday I still doubted myself, thinking I was just convincing myself.

But then taking that test confirmed what I thought. Will still take a test tomorrow morning though, put my mind at ease.

Thanks again for all the replies.

Our doctors never bother re-doing pregnancy tests, since the home ones are so effective now they just take your word for it- you can book an appointment to see the doc where you'll just get the congratulations and list of things not to do, but last time I just booked straight in with the midwife since I'd spoken to the doc on the phone to double check the situation with some medication I was taking.

  • Congratulations! :j

No need to see the doctor at all, 2nd time I was pregnant I just rang the doctors receptionist who arranged for me to be booked in with a midwife a few weeks later (which was carried out at home).

When I fell pregnant I tested when 3 days late, did four tests (!) all came up positive straight away, went to the doctors and their test was negative! But I knew I was pregnant as the home tests I did gave really strong positive result, went back to the docs the next day and got a positive there, just goes to show the doctors tests aren't as good as the ones you buy yourself.
    Congratulations by the way!

Congrats and all the best for your pregnancy! I only did one test and went to my GP expecting they would do another test to confirm, but they said the home tests are so good these days they just take your word for it. Once the symptoms kick in it starts to feel real, but I still couldn't quite believe it until I had my first scan.

You're definitely pregnant, but you may find yourself doing a test every few days as proof to yourself till the symptoms kick in. It's very common to do that. Nothing beats seeing that line come up!

yip i would agree you are unlikely to get a false positive
but you can get a false negative
just always use first urine of day thats the most concentrated
