just wondering what you guys pay to heat an average sized house for one day (gas) , say for 10 hours?

I have an old boiler and it's costing me around £4-5 for a 2 bed flat, seems high to me?

  • Take a meter reading before gas comes on and after it goes off, then post up the units used on here. Along with does the flat have double glazing, nice heavy curtains, well darught proofed and insulated and are the rooms tall ceilinged or more moden and lower? That is the type of things that help people to give better answers.

depends on the tarrif, weather, standing charge loading, and the thermostat settings amongst other things

gas fire about 3.8kw/h or 13p/hour, ch about 3-5 (reduces as it heats up) times that. ie 1st hour from cold uses 20kwh, second hour 13kwh.

including standing charge about £2.85 or 72kwh/day or 2.28 imperial (ft3) units, 6.47 metric (m3) units, heating in this weather for a house. if ch was on 24/7 in cold weather it would use about 190kwh or £7.15/day.

if you post readings, say whether it is a metric or imperial meter or convert to kwh (imperial x 31.59, metric x11.16)

cheers, will do that tomorrow then, I'll try and take those measurements over a 6 hour period as that should give a good average.

I think we are paying that for having extra heating on in the snow weather. I have used over ride on the timer for the last 3 days.

I put the CH on extra in the cold when the house temp drops below 17 - 18C.
The secret to success is making very small, yet constant changes.:)

my flat drops to 8c when the heating is off, I'm happy if the emp is 18c, too hot at around 21c but keeping the flat at 18c as you say in the winter is very costly, having the heating on at night is not an option as it is just too expensive.

But I guess we put up with the fuel price increases and don't hold the government to account enough.

I'm warm enough in bed as I have about 3 duvets on and sheets and a mattress topper...oh and an electric blanket :o but even all of that doesn't stop a stray arm out of the covers nearly being frozen off

£5 over 10 hours, so about 50p per hour

That should get you at least 12kWh per hour of gas.
Even if you have an old system that is only 60% efficient, that still means over 7kWh of heat per hour. ... or about the same as 3 -4 fan heaters on full constantly ... in a 2 bed flat!

    Why?

I was only guessing, as said I will get back with some figures but yes my boiler is very old, the repair man yesterday said it was 30 years old

A lot of talk so far about comparing apples with oranges, I agree a lot of factors but to give you an idea

    Currently: £7 - £8.50 per day (4 inches of snow, -4 to 1c)
Normally through winter it's as low as £3 but normally around £4.50 per day.

    5 bed detached,
    8 years old,
ideal classic boiler with 20 radiators
    Heating 6am to 11pm daily
Average internal temp 18c bedroom 21c lounge
    Hot water 60c
    Occasional gas hob usage

This is about a 1/3rd more expensive than my old house, a 4 bed detached, different boiler, fewer rads and fuel prices were cheaper last year.
