Does anyone know if in practice, a non-working British citizen could go to say, Germany or France and claim benefits straight away?

Germany: You would be entitled to unemployment benefit. That would be ~€374 per month. I don't know if Germany has an equivalent of housing benefit etc. The German system for unemployment benefit is actually more complex but much better than ours.

In short you'd probably need to speak to a German or someone who has worked there for some time to find out what benefits you'd be entitled to and how to claim them; which is much the same for immigrants to the UK.

Under a Tudor law it is supposedly illegal for Welshmen to enter your city after nightfall – and apparently legal to shoot them with a bow and arrow within the city walls there after midnight?

Henry V actually introduced that law (never repealed) which is quite strange as he was actually a Welshman himself (as were the Tudors). We do have a clock tower with the face pointing West removed, apparently so that we won't give the time of day to the Welsh :)

Quite an amazing city for its past exploits and also unique in many way and can claim to be a worlds first in...

...The Rows are unique not only in Britain but (in this precise form) anywhere in the world? The covered walkways on four of the main streets of the city allow create double-decker shopping there, and have done so according to records since at least the 13th century...

so I suppose it has had its fair share or foreign residents.;)

A free virtual guided tour for you Bertie, a quite interesting site (below). It is quite strange really, we have always been popular with young Spanish students and tourists but recently (like everywhere else) we have been deluged by Poles and the like but it has not been that noticeable. Chester has a generally high % white population often speaking in strange tongues (like Welsh and Spanish) so the Poles and the like have blended in quite well. I wonder how the next wave of EU immigrants will blend in next year?

The letting agency in my office is inundated with new immigrant HB enquirers. It's starting to irk me.
Quite often the English they know is "housing benefit?". What a surprise.

The answer is very difficult to put into words Conrad but we will be forced to take measures to control all of those who claim irrespective of nationality before we empty the piggy bank.

The Border Control would be the first place to tighten up all entries into our country, but with the EU as it is in its present state we have not a lot of choice.

If David Cameron could do something on these lines then we would be at least turning the corner and into the straight.

    Not sure which is sadder....

Your lack of knowledge of the difference between a Ponzi scheme and a Pyramid scheme....

    Or

Your ignorance of just how devestating to society it would be if the pensioner/worker ratio inverted

Just curious, are you admitting you know it is a pyramid scheme then;)?
