Shutting school because one teacher is having an operation

Does anyone else think this is reasonable?

A teacher at my sons school will be taking two weeks off for an operation to sort out a long standing sports injury. I have no problem with this as such things can happen.

Apparently, the other teachers have whinged that it is not fair he is getting two weeks "off" whilst they have to work, and have complained to the headmistress.

She has now responded by allowing all the other teachers 3 days off and therefore the school will be shut later in the year. She says they can do this as they have a "surplus" of teaching days to cover things such as this which can be used at the headteachers discretion.

The PTA have complained already. I am aware there is a lot of longstanding politics going on with the teacher and the other staff.

  • If they have a surplus of days off to cover such contingencies then they will just use them for something else if no-one has to go into hospital.
It's not my fault your honour, they made me do it.
  • Im a teacher and have never heard of this?!? Is this at a private school? I really cant imagine this would ever happen in my school!

It does sound as though something has been said, and chinese whispers have taken hold of it and send it into orbit. It sounds extremely far fetched!

I agree, there has to be more to it than that.

Definitely more information/clarification required from the OP............
  • Its many years since I worked for the Education Department but it wouldn't have been allowed to happen back then. If the school is still under the control of the Local Authority you could contact the Education Department and ask them if the rumour you have heard is true.

The OP is a long-standing member of the site. Perhaps they'll provide some evidence as it does sound rather far-fetched. If true, surely most schools would just use a supply teacher for those days, particularly as they're known in advance.
