How do you and oh manage your money?

I know there have been many threads on here about how couples manage there money, ie all to joint account, or separate accounts etc.
Just wondering if I could get some ideas of a fair way to do this when one of the parties is in a commission based job, so salary varies a lot from month to month?
Thanks in advance x

We have always had a household account.
Everything needed for the house and a small buffer goes into that account. This pays for Petrol, food, bills etc.
We each retain our own small accounts for personal items (eg hair cuts, nights out, gifts etc).
Any extra goes into savings.
I used to do irregular hours and every penny was put into the savings for my OT which varied greatly.0 -
Joint account, everything goes into it. Once the bills and general expenses are paid (that's most of it given we have two kids) and a % put into the savings account then it's a question of who needs what and whose turn it is now. OH earns a lot more than me but he wouldn't dream of thinking that meant he could have lots of pocket money while I was struggling to afford a haircut. It's all just regarded as joint money.Val.0

It depends how much you want to nit pick.
My and my DH share all money. It would be weird to have our 'own' money and split bills etc
However before we were married we used to each put a certain amount into a joint account which we use for bills & rent. Unless the commission is wildly different each month just base it on an average.0 -
I do bills and he does rent. We split the rest as it goes along, but tends to be me paying as he never remembers his card
. It's all the same pot at the end of the day. Final cigarette smoked 02/01/18

We just put everything in one account. We both have our separate accounts too but they don't get used. Both our pay gets paid into our joint account and then all bulls and mortgage comes out of it, we have meals out etc, shopping.
Before we had this account, he did mortgage, I did bills so it was about even really but it was still our money so was never a problem.Married my wonderful husband on 8/9/12 :j0 -
I manage it and he gets an allowance :rotfl:
This way, all bills are paid, we have all the things we need and then we get goodies too.
If I left if up to him, on week 2 after payday we would be on pasta!0 -
me and dw have separate accounts , i pay for food and all bills apart from car insurance ,and tv , she pays for kids clothing , singing lessons and xmas /birthday presents etc
she is a spender , i'm a saver , she's normally overdrawn and we have had a few rows about her credit card bills ,a 6 year battle for me , telling her that she couldn't afford it , missing repayment dates getting fined , however she's come round to my way of thinking after i found a card in her purse , so i cut it in half lenghtways and just had the top half poking out of the pocket in her purse , she went to use it for a load of tat only to find the bottom half wasn't there
god knows what she's spent the money on , it's several thousands of £'s , she's got nowt to show for it , i on the other hand have paid off our mortgage 6 years early0 -
Does anyone have any money left these days after mortgage/rent, bills and food?:(

We don't have any joint accounts, just a few each in individual names.
I control them all though and in effect all the money is pooled together (known as family money). I've always been good financially so my wife lets me do everything and I try and maximise what we do have by investing etc.
We each get £100 a month to spend on whatever we want. The other person is not allowed to comment on how that money is spent even if they think its wasted.
We then have 2 credit cards each and 2 debit cards that we carry around so we can buy anything that's needed. We have 2 just in case there are any bank system problems - always good to have a backup.
It works really well with us and its great having the £100 to spend with no guilt etc.0 -
We have our own accounts - he has some income into his and some from our joint account, and he manages our french house.
I have mine - which my wages go into and I buy our groceries and run my car and spend it on what I don't want him to know about....
We have a joint account he pays his wages into and I pay our household bills and kids things out of that - and then spend what's left
Generally speaking he earns it and I spend it.0
