Broadband slow....complete novice needs advice.

Broadband is with Talk Talk.(basic package, customer for over 5years).
Over last eight weeks the broadband has become increasingly slower. I have an iPad connected to wiFi and now cannot even watch IPlayer as buffering is so bad. On both the house computer and the IPad any photo images take an age to load. Text is also a lot slower than it used to be.
What has changed to make this happen? I have not downloaded any new programmes. Don't use for on line games or movies.
Did a speed check on line and the dowload and upload speeds were 0.3 Mbps
What checks should I be doing? Any advice on how to improve the speed or is it time to upgrade my BB package?

Or perhaps you could report it as a fault!
  • It might be something as simple as giving your router a reset. When my connection drops in speed its a usual process for me.

I have been re-setting the router at least once a week and its not improving the speed. I am worried that if I call Talk Talk, their advice will be to upgrade and it may be my equipment that it at fault. As a complete novice I have no idea what to do next.
If I change Broadband providers will they supply and connect new equipment, or should I stay with TT?

Post the make and model of your router, or look it up here and post your router line statistics.

PS You do have the router plugged into your master phone socket, and all other working sockets have microfilters.

Router model is Echolife HG520s. Am not sure how to find my router line stats Sorry! This is all new to me and need basic help.
Router is not plugged into main phone socket (near front door) but to an upstairs line. All sockets have microfilters.

Retest using ethernet (not wi-fi) with your router plugged into the test socket behind the master socket faceplate.
If it's better, then you may simply have a wi-fi issue, if so start by changing the wireless channel.
Plugging your router into a distant extension is not a good idea, one of the main cause of slower speeds, and nothing to do with your supplier.
if it's an issue with wi-fi, extensions or domestic wiring, then changing supplier will make no difference at all.
Have you tested for noise/crackling on the line?

What speed BB are you supposed to be getting? I presume it is far higher than 0.3Mbps.

So if speed tests are showing far slower, and the equipment is provided by TT, then you need to talk to their technical support.

It could be a fault on the network that they won't know about until you report it.

You shouldn't have to upgrade to get the speed you are already paying for.

try the router in the master socket, maybe even with a new filter. This will discount any faults with internal wiring or filters (i.e. Your side of the deal).

You say upload was 0.3, but what download speed are you getting.

Have you added any new household equipment that may interfere, phones? Microwaves? baby monitors etc...

regular resets of your equipment, may actually put your modem \ line into training mode where it looks to find the best settings..

Has your wifi been compromised? someone doing lots of downloads?
