Wasn't sure my anti freeze was ok so just been to halfords. Asked if I bought the antifreeze checker could someone sort for me. Lad said he would check it. Said it needed it cos nearly empty. Put about half litre in. He said neat he didn't dilute it. Spilled quite abit pouring in cos dark and only had a torch. I've got home and having a panic. One he used is for cars older than 1998. Mine is a t reg, plus says dilute. Am I gonna have a probkem. Thanks

Although T reg is registered in 1999 there is a good chance your car was built during 1998.

You can add some water to it. Mine is meant to be a 50/50 mix. Keep an eye on it to much sure it doesn't drop.

Unless your system had no water in it, then it will have been diluted by the water already in the system????????????

yep, but if the checker said "nearly no antifreeze" then adding half a litre isn't going to do much good.

Sounds like a sales tactic by Halfords to me, get it checked for concentration by someone who knows what they are doing.

Also, antifreeze damages paint so check to see where the spilt stuff ended up

If you had no antifreeze in there or the water level was low then i would have poured it in neat also.

Its a bonus at least it wont freeze. I presume you have never checked it before now. My cooling system is about 75% antifreeze. The downside it cost a bit more to fill it rather than 50% water. But it wont freeze at any temperature we are likely to get in the UK.

Some antifreeze will start to freeze and actually be slush at -15. Thats no good if temperatures get as cold as they did a couple of years ago.

No I've never checked it before and have had the car 18 months. Can check the oil, fill with fuel, check thee pressure and washer bottle but that's my limit. Looks like I've been lucky it hasn't already frozen. Only thought about it when I got email off halfords about anti freeze levels.

I take a bit of coolant out and put it in the freezer overnight. Any sign of it going mushy and I would drain a bit off and top up with neat antifreeze.

The lad at halfords just poured about half the bottle in neat, so I take it it should be ok. How much should a yaris hold approx.? Thanks

If not go to a proper garage and get it checked again

Half a 5 litre bottle then you should be OK. Half a 1L bottle then maybe not.

How much water does the cooling system hold? You need at least 40% antifreeze in it.

there should be a expansion tank infront of the battery. over filling will not do anything but drain off iirc there is a little vent moulded into the cap when the pressure increases the excess fluid will drain from there
