Orange Home Broadband

Hi all,

I have just had a call from Orange 01482489747 regarding my Orange Home Broadband. Currently Orange provides this service to me at £15.37/mth which includes a 'line 2 ' which allows me to make daytime calls to 01,02,03 numbers and orange mobiles. This is done via their router.

They informed me that the 'line 2' was going to finish shortly and that I would need to move to the new service which would all be incorporated onto my home line (ie not another phone, as it currently is with line 2), with additional benefits but charging me £20ish.

They advised that as I have had the service for over a year, that I am no longer in contract and that they could now turn of the 'line 2' service as 'there is now no contract.' Can this be done legally?

I previously had a mobile phone contract with them which they wanted me to change from, but at the time I didn't want to change and they were unable to change the contract even though the 12mths had passed. In fact they offered me some fantastic deals to change to in order to get me off the tariff which i eventually accepted. I would have thought this was similar for the 'line 2' broadband contract.

They also advised that I am free to leave Orange without notice now. I feel it is an underhanded way to force me to move to a more expensive tariff.

Thoughts/advice please.

Kind Regards

Alig

  • You're right, they are trying to get rid of you/force you onto a different tariff.

So whats stopping you from looking elsewhere? Orange/EE don't exactly have the best reputation and they're not the best value either.

There is certainly still a contract, all that has changed is that you have reached the end of the minimum term. If you're happy as you are, decline the move and it should continue. The only exception is if the original contract specifically stated that the Line 2 service was date-limited.

I had a call from that Orange number last Friday, but I was too busy to talk to them, they said they would call me back the next day, but did not. I also still use the 2nd line, I pay £5.11 for BB and BT for line rental.

I have had a quick look around other BB providers, but when you add up the extras of anytime UK calls and international calls to 100 countries, to get a similar package, it seems more expensive elsewhere.

I have not decided what to do yet, what with the problems people have had with the free BB from Orange, although it does look like they are going to stop the 2nd line.

I got the "Orange second line" call last night.

So... they want to take away my second line (a huge issue) because the technology is "incompatible" with their new systems (it's just VOIP for goodness sake - one the most common internet protocols), and get this: they want to charge me £21 per month for the privilege. FOUR times what I'm currently paying, for substantially less.

As a family we've been Orange branded (mobiles and BB) for ever, but c'mon Orange you're just taking this p**s now.

I think Ofcom giving EE a 4G monopoly has just turned the EE management into monopolists. They're looking to fat cat bonuses for a year or two, and when normal competition is re-established (if it ever is) they'll be gone, as will have we.

BUT can they really take our 2nd line phone number away at their own whim? No offer of forwarding, porting or anything. It'll just be dead from the end of March. It's on our stationery and I've given it out numerous business contacts, so the consequential loss is likely to be significant. Should I contacting Ofcom?

Padders, HORRANGE took my 2nd line away for supposed "underuse" (even tho' they had billed me that month!!) When I phoned and argued, a very unpleasant individual told me that my 2nd line number had been reallocated anyway - so basically tough s**t!! I left them shortly after ,never EVER to return!!
  • If they want to discontinue a service, you can't force them not to.

If you're in contract you will be able to cancel without penalty, but apart from that, they can do what they want.

Are you on a business contract, or just using a residential line for business purposes?

I too am on the £5.11 package with a second line and received a call the other night saying the second line is stopping at the end of March. For the £5.11 I get unlimited uk calls on the second line (inc orange mobiles) and also international calls, so it has been a great package.

I'm also currently paying BT £17 per month for line rental - I could get this a bit cheaper if I pay for the year upfront though.

Anyway, I was offered a package if I move my main line to Orange, I can have a £20 per month package for unlimited broadband, UK calls, and around 500mins to UK mobiles and international numbers. I'm seriously tempted given that this will reduce my overall monthly payments. I would have liked to upgrade sometime soon to Fibre, but don't want to pay the £30-40 for an all in package which seems to be the going rate at the moment, and they couldn't offer me any deal on this that was tempting for me. Unless others can persuade me otherwise I think this is the way to go.

Fair enough, it was a cracking deal and suited us perfectly, but they won't have made any money from us directly from it. However, what they may be missing is that the 2nd line free calls to Orange mobiles is the kingpin around which all the family could be persuaded to stay on Orange. Now it's going (and that remotely decent Orange mobile retention offers have disappeared), leaves us no option but to move away. That's about £160 in revenue per month in total. Now they have their shiny new high value EE monopoly customers they've just lost interest in the Orange brand. Not what Ofcom intended presumably.

My real beef though is how they feel they can take the number away because it's convenient to them. What else can Orange not be trusted with?

Have Orange said which international destinations it will include, as I am currently getting 100 with the 2nd line.
