Car insurance amendment costs - different insurers

Just found out that not all insurance companies are not created equal and even if you get a cheap quote you might end up paying more in the long run.

Just bought a new car and Budget want £30 admin fee to change the car details. I've got a private plate that I want transferring on soon so that'll be another £30.

This is all on a permium of £146 only so its a fair % extra!

Appreciate that it costs money but £30 for someone to edit a document seems a bit much. Also, when its the exact same car with just a different plate.

Found that some insurers do this free and some charge much less. Anyone know if theres a list? Worth factoring this in next time you get insurance quotes.

Surprised to see M&S down as one of the most expensive £25 for amendments especially since which seem to like them.

Not surprised to see Budget is the worst for both amendments and cancellations. Great....

    Which ones?

Planning to cancel a policy with budget that charges a whopping £75 fee.

£140 premium and after 3 months I get £35 back.

Reason for this is new car. If I convert my policy to cover this new car for remaining 9 months they want £160 plus £30 admin fees anyway (£190 total).

I can get a whole new policy for 12 months from M&S for £175.

Last time I go anywhere near budget.

All of them have to state them and have had to for some time. Due to variability they may be stated as an "up to" value.

The FSA are keen on administration fees, they think it is fairer for those that need a service to pay for it rather than everyone pay more for those that make changes.

£30 is by no means the worst, some charge a lot more. Previously complaints have been lodged and failed with the FOS for fees up to £50.

The OP is absolutely correct, in the majority of cases insurers that charge the least up front premium are not simply doing so because they're willing to make the least profit but typically with have the highest fees, most limited cover, strictest application of T&Cs etc

For insurance, particularly outside of Motor, people need to look at VALUE and not just price
  • Its £25 on admiral maybe a list of those that dont charge should be created and stickied in this section?

£15 on my club scheme. Join your model/make clubs on the net and see who they use.

  • My bug bear is with One Call.
At renewal point the price includes an admin fee.
    I always cancel.
I always stick with them and submit a "new application" (Much cheaper).
Their smart computers appear to uncancel my old policy and give me the "cheaper deal" as a renewal.
They then charge the admin fee.
Gave up trying to get around it as I suppose I dont need to send all my proof back again etc.

Yes. I know M&S act like super-brokers for this but, ultimately, its their name.

And they are recommended by which.
