I am not. MSN Messenger and Live Messenger are the same service but one is the older version of the software and the latter is part of the Live suite. Someone who has not updated it for quite some time is likely to have the MSN branded version.0 -

No you don't get the option to change back even if you log into your email via msn.co.uk by clicking on the hotmail icon it still comes up as outlook. They arent just retiring the windows live messenger they are changing hotmail to outlook.
The look of the outlook is ok very similar to hotmail anyway and I could live with that but if you click on live mail from the start menu it doesnt need a password to read all of your mails although it still pops up a window to enter password its useless because behind the window is your full open email account and click on anything and you can read it all. You just click cancel on the window just to get rid of it, no password.
I have about 100 folders so I don't really fancy changing email but I may have to think about it, I really would like to keep a pop up alert for emails though somehow and it looks like outlook isnt going to be doing that anywayThanx

I've had a look at several Microsft pages including this one all with pretty much the same reply
You will still be able to get the email notification at the bottom right corner of the screen if you are logged in to Windows Live Messenger. A notification would pop up if a new email arrives.
However if you wish to have an email notification feature without accessing Windows Live Messenger, we regret to inform you but that certain feature is not available in Hotmail or Outlook.com.
That is only while windows live messenger is still working though so by March we wont have it anyway.
There must be a lot of people still wanting that feature though so I wonder why they are doing that when people will most likely be thinking that they may have to get a new email account. Perhaps they are just going to get rid of even outlook eventually.Thanx

So what happened when you clicked on the 'Switch back to Hotmail' tab?0 -
Hi i have had an hotmail account for about 15 years, to clear the confusion about MSN MESSENGER/WINDOWS LIVE MESSENGER/WINDOWS MESSENGER - they are all the same thing.
Microsoft kept changing the name of the messenger client to reinvent it and refresh it if you like. Its the same with the separate email address service. Originally it was Hotmail then changed to Windows Live Mail and now Outlook.com, again, this is all the same product but messenger is an optional thing that doesn't affect your email address it will still be there.
I am guessing that they have sold it to Skype because they don't want to service it any more because (as someone else said) facebook has largely taken over in so many respects.
If anyone was interested in a messenger (there is no separate email service) you could try Paltalk Messenger unlike Yahoo Messenger and MSN Messenger (there was too much abuse so they shut down their own chat rooms years ago) they do have chat rooms that are "moderated" you can create your own rooms, have trivia games, talk about current affairs, rooms for computer help and many other topics etc It's a good alternative to facebook. My Signature is MY OWN!!0 -
Yes thats right, I don't use it for chatting but I do have contacts for email.
I'll wait a little while before doing anything as it retires fully in march.
If it turns out that the skype thing does what I need I'll instal it but if not I will look for an alternative, someone mentioned thunderbird I'll check that out too.
Thankyou
It may be implemented at a future date.
Try https://www.trillian.im/ which is a messenger service which will notify of email arrival on many accounts not only hotmail.0 -

Other way around - Microsoft bought Skype in 2011.0 -

Sorry NiftyDigits it never registered to me that the switch back to hotmail part of your message was highlighted to click onI only found it myself a few minutes ago within the outlook mail giving the option to switch back to hotmail. I have done so now and it gave me the chance to provide feedback so I did do. I suggested email notification, a few changes to the outlook mail and I asked them to protect outlook from the start menu with a password.
I guessed it was microsoft that bought skypeThanx

Skype does not support email notification for hotmail.

Good, thanks, I'll give it a try I'm looking for something to replace msn messenger too. Not for sending IM's I havn't done that in years, just the "you've got mail!" notification popup that was ever so handy. M$ wanted you to pay to download hotmail mail to Outlook Express IIRC. So I uninstalled it and used webmail ever since. This was some years ago as you may guess. :cool:Blessed are the geeks, for they shall inherit the Internet.0 -
Thanks Lady K
I will have to update mine and my mums messenger account.
Your hotmail email account shouldn't be affected0
