    Overlapped post!
See my previous message. I don't think you're really using Live Messenger for what it is supposed to be ... you're just using it for the email management.
I think you need an email client application (others will recommend, I am sure) ... but I doubt skype will do what you're wanting it to do for you.

Yes thats right, I don't use it for chatting but I do have contacts for email.

I'll wait a little while before doing anything as it retires fully in march.
If it turns out that the skype thing does what I need I'll instal it but if not I will look for an alternative, someone mentioned thunderbird I'll check that out too.

    Thankyou
    Thanx

  • Yes, I've heard many people recommend Thunderbird, but I've never actually used it myself. A quick search has revealed that it's just what I think you need/want.

what operating system are you using and what web browser

i suggest Live mail as this will work with hotmail as you can set this up during the installation process.

    windows.microsoft.com/en-GB/windows-live/essentials-other-programs

click the download now and then only chose the actual live programs you need (live mail)

I use win 7 and IE9 at the moment and hotmail opens in IE too.

I do have firefox as a second choice but I like to keep that separate for other things.

I might have to try the live mail on its own then but I just thought it would dissappear along with the messenger. I never thought of installing that on its own.

i find a good thing with live mail as its linked to your microsoft account, if for any reason you need to reinstall your PC/Laptop and reinstall live mail as soon as you set up your email account again all your emails will also reload.
  • I agree with Live Mail, and wish I'd not agreed with Thunderbird earlier :o

I'd mentioned Outlook Express before (was a free microsoft product) and wondered if it still existed, but a google search revealed it has been superceded a couple of times but still exists as Live Mail now.

Again I've not used it myself recently (I use Outlook, part of the Office Suite), but I'd go with a free microsoft product designed to work with microsoft emails any day of the week. You've nothing to lose!

I've got myself into a right mess

I decided to try live mail and wanted to see what would happen if I ran it on its own without using the windows live messenger so I found it from the start button, clicked on it, put in my password and it opened up as outlook, I didnt like it so closed it down and started the live messenger again expecting it to have returned back to hotmail but when I clicked on emails it was still outlook.

The big problem is that outlook mail is set by default to open without a password and I really don't like it.
After trying various things I searched and found on google that others have tried to find a sollution to it as well. Apparently it was set by default to make it quicker for users to access mail but I don't like my email account being open to anyone else using the laptop.

What a stupid default setting, how could they think people would be happy with that.
It seems that hotmail are replacing hotmail with outlook completely soon anyway so all hotmail users will have this problem.

I did try to do a system restore to get it back to hotmail for now until I decide what to do but its still the same after the restore so my email is open without privacy :(
    Thanx

Do you not get the option to switch back to Hotmail?

It is the windows live messenger, I use it because its fairly simple and I get email alerts,

I'd forgotten about this as I switched to Gmail a while ago (which does have alerts)

I've had a look at several Microsft pages including this one all with pretty much the same reply

You will still be able to get the email notification at the bottom right corner of the screen if you are logged in to Windows Live Messenger. A notification would pop up if a new email arrives.

However if you wish to have an email notification feature without accessing Windows Live Messenger, we regret to inform you but that certain feature is not available in Hotmail or Outlook.com.

1, messenger is going, will the New skype have the same pop up feature as messenger

I'm sorry to inform you that Skype doesn't offer this feature.

Looks like it may be time for a new email account.

If it's any help - I still use my hotmail address and just import all my mail to Gmail so there's no need to bother about changing your online address with everyone.
  • Here's a suggestion that no-one will like! Try setting up Incredimail and enjoy all the bells and whistles for fun. Choose from lots of different 'notifiers' to tell you when messages arrive. Just don't pay for the upgraded version.
