Interfering in the landlord-tenant relationship before it's necessary is much like drilling into someone's wall without thinking whether it's the an appropriate thing to do.0

Indeed, what tenants do to their rented home is none of the neighbour's business - however, what they do to the neighbour's house (i.e. drilling holes in it to fix things to it) is very much the neighbour's business.
That is the whole point, it's not what they've done to the rented property that is the issue but what they've done to the neighbour's property.0 -

I was referring to this from the OP. It is irrelevant to the issue what the tenants are doing inside their rented home. If they owned the house then the OP would speak to them about it without reference to any third party. I don't see any need to approach this any differently at least at this stage.Ok, so quick update in response to my last post.
I haven't yet called the LA due to work picking up this afternoon and I also wanted to double check the boundary line. Not that it matters as ultimately she has drilled into one of our house walls.
Now I've had a chance to sit down, go through our documents and check everything, I will be going around to speak with her tomorrow after work with my partner in order to discuss that she didn't ask our permission to fix the post to the wall, we would have refused anyway to maintain the integrity of the wall and that she will need to have it removed and filled with mortar where the holes are left so it is returned to as it was before within the week.
Depending on how that conversation goes I will then be getting in contact with the LA to either inform them that the discussion has gone well, or went south and see how they progress it. I don't think it is unfair to inform the LA about what has gone on, as ultimately it is in their interest to ensure that their clients house is being looked after. In my view if they did this without thinking to someone elses house, what could they have done inside the rented one.

Actually I don't "get it" either as to just why OP would think of contacting the landlord.
If OP is going to complain about this - and it would appear he is - then the tenant and the tenant only is the correct person to approach.
Interested to see the reasoning as to just why someone would go to another person (in this case the landlord) about one tiny error of judgement....:cool:0 -

If your neighbour drilled holes in to your wall without permission would you consider it a tiny error of judgement?Its not that we have more patience as we grow older, its just that we're too tired to care about all the pointless drama

So the chat was had, all is understood, the post will be removed, and another sunk in to the ground as should have been done originally.
As to contacting the LA, having rented for many many years I wouldn't consider doing ANYTHING to the house I was living in much less to any of the surrounding houses. Certainly not without contacting all of those people concerned.
That is my reasoning. I'm assuming that seeing as they didn't consider to ask us if it was ok to drill in to our wall to mount their gate post then they wouldn't have asked the LA/LL if it was ok to do this to theirs. I am viewing it from the LL position, I would assume they would want to know if things like this happen to their home. It isn't exactly a small investment to buy a house and then to just let anyone do whatever they want to their house. To be completely honest, I don't know why I'm even conveying my reasoning as it is my opinion of what is right. It won't be agreeable to everyone but oh well.
Thanks for the advice from everyone regarding the original problem. This forum is a gold mine for information.
