I emailed the company and this is what they replied-
The amount is based on the average price of new and used handsets on Amazon you can purchase the same handset for this amount on Amazon.
However i dont feel this is fair as the used phones are not even in good condition, they have major cosmetic issues or scratches. So they are basically paying me the amount between a new and a used phone.
What do you reckon i should do?

Accept that you didn't buy 'new for old' insurance, take the offer and move on. The phone you lost was used and a quick google finds lots of refurb'd 9780's for £150 and under.
You might want to consider whether it is worth paying extra for 'new for old' insurance next time round?There's love in this world for everyone. Every rascal and son of a gun.
