    This doesn't surprise me at all. London like most big cities is not a friendly place any more. People would rather walk on by than try helping someone. That is my experience of London any way.

    I agree this is what I would expect to happen in London, but I think it is common of other big cities also. I have gone to try to help people before now, and a friend will pull me away - "mustn't get involved". In that case I will stand at a safe distance and ring the police/ ambulance, in the hope that they will arrive before too much more harm has been caused. :o
  • The barrister son of a friend of ours was mugged a few years ago, in the same area your friend was. From what I remember the circumstances were horribly similar. And the Police didn't catch him/them.

    OP, you've been very kind and offered your friend somewhere to stay and I quite understand why - we had another friend who was attacked violently (stabbed) and robbed, he was so afraid to go home in case somehow his assailants knew where he lived. Our friend stayed a few nights with us, didn't sleep much as he was still in shock, but at least he knew he was safe with us. Gave him time to get out of his rented flat and move into another. Your friend will get help from Victim Support (and I'm amazed the Police didn't pass on their details) - maybe the 'big burly bloke' thing worked against him.

    Victim support?? :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

    What is wrong with you people? :rotfl:

    Victim support - yeah, very helpful, if you're lucky they will send a personal alarm through the post (a key ring with a pin to pull which sounds an alarm).

    OP, seeing as the police have been informed, your friend WILL receive a phone call and/or letter from victim support.

    Yes, that's London for you:( - THAT IS PRETTY MUCH EVERYWHERE FOR YOU NOWADAYS

    I hope your friend makes a speedy recovery.

    Sorry to have to correct this post, because I agree with it, but think that what used to happen in London and other cities now happens all over.
  • Whereabouts by Temple was the attack?

    Over a decade ago I worked just up from Temple at Anderson Consulting and they would have had CCTV on their doors. Is there any chance the CCTV in the buildings around there picked it up?

    Another caution to all not to walk around on their own no matter how huge or male they might be.

    I say it all the time to my husband when he comes back late from London, but men seem to think they are safe.

    How can anyone, male or female, avoid walking around on their own?

    I was mugged with a friend!

    :eek::eek: For real?

    I have lived in London for the last 25 years, and I have no qualms at all about walking around on my own and just living my life. Why on earth would you not? Have been flashed a few times (once when I was actually with a friend) and pickpocketed a few times (also usually when I am with someone else) but never mugged or assaulted.

    My husband who has lived in London for the same amount of time has only been mugged once, on the doorstep as he got out of a taxi. And yes, both the taxi driver and passers by did intervene and chase the attackers off and help him. Its pure prejudice to say that Londoners wouldn't do this!

    I dont think this has got anything to do with it being in London!

    You should look up psychological studies on the bystander effect for example.

    Plus like Nicki says, how do you even know for sure there were people around to help in the first place?

    If youre going to get angry about this happening to your friend, make it about the idiot who beat him up.
