Yep, I was one of them for a long time. Good on the OP's son for getting into the world of work I say.

I need to thank my parents because if I lost my job they would help me out instead of asking what benefits I could get.

I would help my son AND see what Benefits he could get, that is part of helping him.

I am going to be a bit picky here, I am afraid. Anyone under 35 is entitled to payment, up to certain limits, for one room in a shared property. Things are not - yet- so bad that they are expected to share a room!

I hope that the OP's son is soon able to find another job.

Thanks, welcome to MSE and now move on. He has not yet lost his job, he asked me to get some info should it happen. As part of my role as a parent I have done so. Many thanks for your comment.

Katie - sorry can't offer any advice but am absolutely disgusted by some of the stupid comments that have been made. Good luck to your lad and you and fingers crossed that it all works out well.

With respect Katie, at 19 he should not be working in HMV but trying to get a degree or some skill that will help him setup in life. How harsh that at 19 you are not able to stay with parents and have to seek out benefits.

THATS IT! off to university with him! , he can graduate with a massive debt, which he will be paying off for years some facts
Recent research by The Marketers' Forum revealed that 80 per cent of employers felt that graduates lack employability skills, so it is not surprising to learn that so many graduates remain unemployed six months after graduating.

P.S Katie, nice to see a Mum looking out for her son:A

And some of them can't even spell or write :D

I would never allow my son to live on the streets, so yes if need be a sofa could be found. We however are in a property that has no room for growth. If we were able to move somewhere bigger ourselves then there would be room. He has lived away from home since just after his 18th. He has worked since leaving college and always supported himself. He rang to tell me the news about HMV and to ask if I could find some info for him, which is why I came on here. The information (useful stuff) given so far has been helpful and we appreciate it. I love all my children and will do my utmost to help them. So far he still has a job, and will do he best to get another if and when he needs to. To those that feel the need to, please do not criticize me for not being able to do you think I should.
He'll also still be liable for rent on the shared house so not claiming what he's entitled to if it covers the rent would be a bit barmy.... if he was demanding the tax payer cover a 2-bed flat I might be a bit more scathing but supporting a 19 year old who obviously does want to work and be independent and has had a change in circumstance through bad luck alone seems a good use of tax payers money.... and probably will help him be in a better position to get another job keeping up his networks, local connections and avoiding the time moving.... plus avoids him vanishing leaving flatmates jointly liable and more likely to get in debt... no brainer....
