HMV and 19 yr old son. Advice please

Ok so he's 19. Lives is shared accomodation and as you know could well be out of a job by tomorrow. So we are confused, we believe he can claim JSA. But can he get any help for housing as he is under 25 ( i think shared acc is for 25-35). We have no room for him back here (there are four of us in a 2 bed house). No other family.

Any advice please would be most welcome.

JSA - for day to day expenses while looking for work
HB - shared room rate as he is under 35 years of age

    See http://www.adviceguide.org.uk/england/benefits_e/benefits_help_if_on_a_low_income_ew/help_with_your_rent_-_housing_benefit.htm
  • I thought there had been some change so that shared room rate was for 25-35 ?? Or did I make an error ??

    Thankyou for response x

The government would like to scrap housing benefit to under 25's however they have not done so yet :)

You my lovely are a star. Thankyou, that helps me to take some of the worry away from him. He is a sensible lad (as a 19 can be sometimes). He is currently updating his CV with a view to starting to hand it round tomorrow to every place he passes to and from work. He is also looking online.

    Thankyou again. xx

I too would be interested in any info as my son (turned 25 yrs old couple of days ago) is in the same position.Waiting to see outcome when he goes into work in HMV tomorrow. Private landlord, 3 bed house, he shares with 2 other housemates. Anyone know what he would be entitled to re housing benefit, or is it only jobseekers he will get?
  • Same as mine i believe - JSA and shared room allowance. Mine is on holiday from work, but is going in tomorrow for update. xx

Grim news about HMV and I hope it won't come to fruition. Your son will get some help so that'll ease your mind. However, on a tangent, his CV, while being proactive in passing it around might I add that one of the glaring omissions with job applications is a "Covering letter" along with the CV. This gives a prospective employee the chance to expand on the CV and really is an eye-catcher among all the other CVs being looked at. Have a look at this link where he can use the guidance to elaborate.

This is not a useful comment and does nothing to assist the OP who is trying to help her son the best she can given that they have a full house.

Thanks for replies, at least they should hopefully get something towards rent. Every little helps.
Katiejones - Hope things work out for our sons and everyone else working there. I just hope they can find another job asap. Good Luck to your your lad.
