Nuisance calls sending me loopy!

  • 1. Get a phone with an answer machine, a display and a barring facility.
    2. When the phone rings look at the display, if it isn't anyone you know let it go to the answer machine.
    3. Genuine callers WILL leave a message. Sales/marketing WON'T.
    4. If the unknown caller has a UK number: Google the number, if it comes up as a known pest put it into the phone as a barred number.
    5. Problem solved !

I use to get annoyed with nuisance calls in end I swallowed my pride and got truecall device and I get zero cold calls in 3 years. I still get them but the device blocks most of them occasionally the device interrogates them first and I get a message saying who it is I can then accept call or refuse and not even speak to them if I refuse

I can view online all calls made and record calls too. Most calls are automatically blocked and you can add friends and family to your whitelist so they bypass truecall and numbers you dont want on your blacklist.

Yes it costs money but in my view its well worth it not to be pestered by companies cold calling and scammers too

    I second "Truecall".

Bought it a month ago, as stated not cheap, but well worth the money in my opinion.i
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.

Don't get angry. See how long you can keep them on the phone.

...but only works for identified calls - most of my "nuisance" calls were of the type that get " we don't have the callers number to return the call" message when using 1471 - I've stopped answering the phone during the day; don't know if its my imagination but since I stopped answering the number of calls seem to have reduced.:TJust checked 1471 and the last incoming call was 10th Jan am !!

It should work with calls where the caller chooses to withhold their number too.

Just because the caller has elected to withhold the details being supplied to the called party does not mean BT don't know where it has originated from ;)

Is anyone else in a similar position? I only work part time at the moment so a few days a week I'm at home most of the day.

Sitting here today doing some work on my laptop the phone has rung 10 times from 2 different numbers, which are:

    01614293351
020301611 (though I've missed a couple of digits here)

Thus far I've been ignoring them and letting them ring. The same 2 numbers call here everyday, several times. Today though I finally snapped and had enough. The first one I answered was the 0161 number to which I got an automated message (even after saying 'hello') saying 'Sorry you missed a call from such and such, it is not urgent and we will call again soon.' I DIDN'T MISS THE SODDING CALL I ANSWERED!!

In a bad mood, the next time it was the 020 number. I answered, shouted that they should stop calling every ruddy day and to take the hint (only admittedly I used worse language than that). I was a tad surprised to receive an instant call back, same number, telling me to 'go f**k myself'. Which in fairness made me lol. But 5 minutes later the same number rang and I let it ring.

But anyway, is there nothing I can do to stop these swines calling so often? We're registered with TPS. The first one is a finance company who are calling because my sister looked up finance options online (she's since bought a car). I've told them she's all sorted now so they can stop calling, to no avail.

God knows who the second one is though. I've put both numbers in to 'who calls me' and found I'm not alone.

Major rant anyway. Sorry, needed to vent somewhere. Surely there are others on here experiencing this.

We bought a CPR Call Blocker £39 on E Bay. Best thing we ever did, it is lovely and peaceful now. We were getting about 5-8 calls a day. We even got a call at 2.47 am just after the Call Blocker was installed, only know 'cos the phone was flashing. We did get one other call the other day on an 'Unavailable' call which you can block if you want, but as I run a business from home I sometimes get those numbers (and are genuine)so didn't want to block them. When he said he wanted the Sky account holder I new he couldn't have been from Sky as they would know our name. I just pressed a button on the blocker and they won't get through on that number again. Brilliant piece of kit.:j

...but it won't work for numbers where BT "claim" they don't have a number eg from overseas or in other circumstances; see http://bt.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/8500/c/345,350,1084

I looked at it when I was a BT customer because I was getting bombarded with calls from "John" or " Glenda" ,quite obviously from somewhere East of Dover!!:) but decided it wasn't worth the money.

Very fed up too of the escalation of these calls in last few months despite being registered with tps.

    Would going ex directory help?

Nearly all my calls know my name and seem to come from abroad.
