Clueless as to what I need

A bit of background. I have a PAYG cheapo £8 phone, on Asda / Vodaphone network, just for emergency, hardly ever used, not a gamer or texter, a £10 top up lasts about 2 years, I guess you get the picture?

I am now on a diet [fat old git] and would like to count steps [pedometer /accelerometer] and distance walked, plus maybe other GPS functions?

I could buy a purpose made item for this but I am guessing some applications on smart phones will do this? So I thought two birds, one stone, approach for similar cost would be a sensible move

Rather than go into a phone shop & display my complete ignorance in these matters, and thus maybe be sold an expensive pup, I am asking here

Latest fashion, fad, colour or "cool" is not required, last year's obsolete model will do just fine

Operating system not import, as long as it works and is fairly universal

I am assuming these functions, once loaded, are free in use & do not gobble up bandwidth?

To summarise

Smart phone, has GPS and ability to download apps to measure distance / steps taken

On PAYG, but not entirely ruling out monthly if it will cook my dinner as well :j

Not e-bay, not fiddly [fat fingers], largish screen [wonky eyes]

Ideally can be used on Asda / Vodaphone

Ah, nearly forgot, under £100 cash on the nose

Thanks

It's not just about the money
  • I tried using my smartphone as a pedometer for jogging, but I couldn't find any decent apps (android). I found just using google maps as a rough estimate and then using a stopwatch worked best. As far as I can tell most of the apps use GPS to track your distance traveled, but it isn't very accurate, and is useless for alleyways and smaller paths. Maybe thats just my experience though.

Don't know about the steps, but for the distance My Tracks android app by Google is one of many available.

I did recommed the samsung galazy until I tried to answer this post, third time lucky, fingers crossed it works! It cost me £40 using virgin mobile PAYG money off rewards and bought a reconditioned 'as good as new' phone...maybe vodaphone do such offers? Check their website or give them a phone. Never used my phone for a step counter but can't imagine why it wouldn't work if theres an app for it.
