Fibre optic broadband suddenly available.

Greetings.

I was just browsing broadbandchoices as im currently on SkyBB and i simply don’t use Sky TV enough for the price im paying.

Now, Plusnet is telling me fibre optic is available in my area. assuming it was an error I checked elsewhere and got the same result. I don’t recall them digging up the streets though last night I did see some work being done close to me.

What would happen if I took the fibre optic deal?

What would happen? You'd get Fibre broadband...
  • What would happen? You'd get Fibre broadband...

Well, sounds good to me then.

I assumed it required alot of digging.
  • It suddenly turned up in our town too and the only hint was BT fibre optic broadband stickers on those green units at the side of the road.

Superfast internet connection - options sky, plusnet, BT vision etc. I went for BT Vision and internet package at £52 per month for all you can eat data and great box set tv - we love it and before had sky for 10 years. If you go through quidco you get money back and £50 sainsburys voucher too.
Food and Smellies Shop target £50 pw - managed average of £49 per week in 2013 down to £38.90 per week in 2016
  • No digging if its similar BT infinity. They use the phone line and do not install a fibre optic cable into your property. the fibre optic cable runs from the BT cabinet local to you back to the exchange. It may not be the same product as Virgin Fibre Optic where the cable is run into your property. BT Infinity (now available through Sky) install a modem into your phone socket and a router plugs into that.
  • I assumed it required alot of digging.

The fibre is merely fed down the same cable duct as the copper cable - no need to dig. All you would see would be a couple of men feeding a cable into a manhole. As it only goes to the nearest cabinet, which could be several hundreds of yards away, you may not see anything.
The fibre will belong to BT/Openreach anyway, not Plusnet, who will just rent "space" on it.
  • Just had a look and they've built a new cabinet next to the old one. Time to upgrade to fibre optic.

I assume it would just be a case of letting the new ISP sort out the migration from SkyBB then id simply cancel SkyTV?

    Thanks for the help folks!

Sky offer fibre as well. Might be worth checking with them.

Makes you wonder what they'll call fibre optic when it is actually the true delivery method (called FTTP). The current system retains the weakest link, the local loop - so whilst it might be a little closer to you, isn't fibre.

As the old saying goes, a chain is only as good as its weakest ink. That just happens to be your bit of it!

The website is saying that im not eligible for talk packages which is strange. Either way, Plusnet off half prie for a year while Sky is only 3 months.

And i can get £35 cashback from PlusNet through Quidco.
