"No satellite signal is being received" when using Sky box

I was a Sky HD plus customer and then about 2 years ago cancelled in order to save money but still have the Sky box through which I view TV. Several months ago it started being awkward when I switched it on, I get the error message "No satellite signal is being received" when I try to watch any of the channels. I switch off and back on and usually it then works on most channels but not the ITV ones. Sometimes I have to switch off/on again to view ITV and sometimes even that doesn't work (usually when there is something on ITV I want to watch lol).

My TV has freeview so it's not the end of the world but I'd rather watch through Sky as this is the only way the upstairs TV works (I have to have Sky on and then I can view that channel upstairs) and more to the point I get channels through Sky that I don't get on freeview.

Anyone has any idea why I get the error? Also I heard that even if you cancel Sky+ you can still use the box to record? Is that true?

  • What make and model of Sky box - printed on rear panel? Essential info on this sort of query.
  • Ahh, sorry didn't realise! Mmmm.....I've looked on the back and there are only company information and numbers above the socket points. There is no make and model information? Would it be anywhere else?
  • Its not underneath either?

Dodgy connection, cable fault, dish out of alignment, faulty LNB, faulty digibox-could be one of a number of things.
Make and model are on the box somewhere.
If you cancel your `Sky sub the PVR functions are disabled unless you pay Sky £10 per month.

You heard wrong about cancelling Sky+ and still recording. Simple things to try, take the card out and put it back in, remove the 2 F connectors (carefully, and when the box is switched off) and put them back in securely. (That's the cables at the back of the box going to the dish).

I think this sounds like an out of alignment dish but before messing around with that I would do a software update (as it is free - not time consuming - and avoaids going up a ladder). Software update may not fix it, but it wont do any harm.

Thanks all, will give that a try. How do you do a software update?

    1. Turn off your box at the WALL
    2. Hold the BACKUP button down on your Sky box
    3. Continue to hold the BACKUP button in and turn it on at the wall
    4. When a message appears on screen UPDATING SYSTEM SOFTWARE and the lights light up on the box, release the BACKUP button
    5. Wait until the Sky box goes into standby (~10 Minutes)

Go outside and check the obvious first. Dish loose, LNB out of alignment, cabling adrift?...
If you can borrow another box for an hour, plugging that in will tell you if it's a box issue or not.
