Phase Eight has some amazing dresses.

This one is very similar to my wedding dress. The phase Eight one is £225 (down from £450) and mine was *cough* just under 3k *cough*.

I think Phase Eight's dresses are brilliant. I wish they'd done ones with sleeves when I was looking for mine. Then, all I could find was strapless, hence the eyewatering cost of the one I had!

Maybe go into a bridal shop and get an idea of styles that you like and flatter you. Then you could get names of styles and brands you like and nosey about online maybe finding it cheaper
  • If you are not bothered about second hand, then Oxfam has a really good wedding section. In fact I donated my wedding dress to them, you can get designer names for a fraction of the price and they post the dress off to you, and you can return it within 14 days if you don't like it/doesnt fit etc. Good luck on your hunt.
  • I got mine from Monsoon for £200; I loved it and felt great in it. Go in and have a look, you may be surprised :)

I can vouch for buying online. Might sound daunting, but I did LOTS of research to make sure I used very reputable site with great customer service.

Obviously you will need to try on first, so that's where you have to be a bit cheeky and actually go to some shops to try.

Some shops will try to hide the make/mode info and/or rename dresses to try to stop you from purchasing elsewhere. Not all do though - and if you know the make of the dress at least, chances are you can find the real name of it on the manufacturer's web site.

    Anyway, I went with http://www.netbride.com

They lived up to the reviews; kept me informed every step of the way, even delivered the dress a little early! I was really happy with them.

Mine was a Maggie Sottero which I got for a quarter of the price in a shop :D

Only slight difficulty I seemed to have, was in finding a local dressmaker who would measure me up and do the alterations. Most people like that seem to work in an actual shop and so won't do freelance work. I did find someone though, and it wasn't enough of a difficulty to put me off.

I think I tried every wedding dress on in about four shops. I just couldn't justify spending over £1,000 on something I'd wear for half a day.

I ended up buying on eBay. I decided on a style I wanted, and then researched all the sellers who sold that style of dress. I checked feedback, and also emailed them - just to see if they would respond and to get a "feel" for them.

I bought a dress very similar to this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/New-Red-ivorys-lace-wedding-dress-bride-ball-gown-prom-dress-size-6-16-or-Custom-/221148405195?pt=UK_Wedding_Dresses&var=&hash=item337d78ddcb

I had to get it taken in due to massive inch loss between ordering and the wedding - I ordered with eight months to go Just In Case anything went wrong and I needed to buy a different dress. The seamstress also made a slight amendment to the hemline of the dress.

    Overall cost - dress £80, alterations £85.
