In practice the Successor state in international law would be UK (Eng/Wal/NI). Scotland would be the non-successor state by all the objective tests under international law.

In practice they would no doubt fast track a lot of changes between the Yes vote and its implementation, including EU membership, the Common Travel Area, Use of UK Sterling/Euro, resource rights, defence assets/forces etc. Clearly some would depend on whether Scotland wanted them and some would be by negotiation.

I guess there would need to be a Governor General to exercise the Queen's authority over Scotland? It would be fun, but very very sad!

That would be my thoughts. I believe that Germany particularly would have more to lose by not trading with the UK than to gain. Just saying that if UK left the EU they would not trade freely with us any more seems rather misleading.

Have Honda, Nissan etc said they will pull out of Britain if the UK leave Europe, or is that just something that the anti referndum brigade like to say with no proof.

Who says they'll refuse to trade?

    Of course they will.

But they certainly won't give us the benefits of being in the free trade club without us paying our membership fees to remain in that club.

And those companies that have chosen to locate their EU headquarters and/or manufacturing facilities here as we're within the EU will still need to maintain those facilities within the EU. So they'll obviously have to leave the UK if we leave the EU.

    Trading agreements, amongst others.

Perhaps it's time to get an opinion from a German.....
Reuters- The head of the German parliament's influential European Union Affairs Committee warned Britain on Thursday against trying to "blackmail" other countries in its push to fashion a new relationship with Europe.

"I sometimes hear the sentiment that even if Britain left the EU it could still easily have free trade agreements with other states," Krichbaum said.

"I would be cautious in this regard: when the whole EU negotiates a free trade agreement, its position is much more powerful than if only one single country negotiates,"
    he added

So would Europe trade with UK or not?
    All seems a bit vague.
I truly cannot see Germany and other EU states wishing to restrict trade with the UK.
