I would have hoped that the school would have provided a pair of trousers for her.

My friend told me a few weeks ago that her 6 year old was taking part in a school show for the parents and the mum was running late and so ended up quite far back in the seats. Her daughter was then on stage in her tights and shirt with no dress! My friend was mortified and it transpired one girl said to her girl to take off the dress-so she did and the class teacher hadnt noticed (unsurprising with lots of classes milling around) but the headmistress when asked about it was totally dismissive to the upset mum while the teachers were so apologetic- I was quite gobsmacked at the Heads attitude rather than the 'no dress' thing.

For heaven's sake, this is a child of six whose underwear *may* have been partly on show during one day of school. Nobody got hurt, it doesn't sound as if the child got cold and certainly there was no indecent exposure - is there really a big problem here? I really can't see it...

there are lots of situations that arent a problem that the school get their noses into. Id expect such an institute to be perfect when it expects perfection the other way.

Lets ask ourselves a simple question.

What would be the view of the school, or teachers if the child rolled up TO school like that.

I think we all know the answer to that question.

The staff would have worried that things were going wrong at home for whatever reason.

Nah to be honest I'd have made the general assumption that it had started as a small hole and hadn't been noticed or mended for whatever reason (I come from a home where the mending pile was only tackled when it hit mountainous levels) and had made interesting levels of progress en-route to school.

Either that or I'd assume what it usually was with ME as a kid which was climbing on stuff and splitting either the crotch of my trousers, or the little split in the back of my school skirt (which never survived more than a week before becoming an indecent split up to my knicker line) - skirts were usually permanently resident on the aforementioned mending mountain.

johnny do you not like your childrens school(s)? As schools are run and staffed by humans, they can't be perfect, and certainly neither of my daughter's schools nor her nursery school pretended to be perfect or any better as teachers than I am as a parent.

Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.

I am not a religious person but I do like the above line. Schools are quite handy at making judgements on things like this. All I am suggesting is that the same legitimate questions can be asked the other way. If schools send children home in this condition, then they should not be asking questions if the reverse occurs.
  • Meh. If you take a look in any school playground, whenever girls run around and are wearing skirts or pinafores or dresses, you see their underwear regularly enough. Most of the time a child is sitting at a table, so nobody sees anything at all.

It's annoying that she picked at the hole (and six year olds are very quick to say somebody else made them do EVERYTHING if there's a possibility they could get into trouble for it), but it's not like she was stripped bare and paraded about in front of the local bail hostel.

It really is a non event.

  • I'm another who personally can't understand why other parents are being so blas! about this kind of incident. Possibly the reason why minimoneysaver and I appear to be more concerned is that we presumably have both undergone child protection training.

I am a Beaver Scout Leader and have both boys and girls aged 6-8 in the colony. I understand why some people are saying that the school may have left her in the trousers to teach her the consequences of her actions, but this is inappropriate and not for the school to decide nonetheless. As a 6 year old, you daughter is likely to be less aware of her body than an older child and therefore not as embarrassed, but there is still a level of dignity which should be maintained. The right course of action for the school to take would have been to ask your daughter to wear her P.E shorts under her trousers, and to telephone you to advise of the situation, so that you could take a spare pair if convenient for you, but also so that you were aware of how the rip was caused without having to ask other parents. Any disciplinary action could then have been left to you.

I'm also concerned that not just one or two, but several teachers and supervisors must have noticed this throughout the day, and even those who might not have seen the incident in the morning, did not feel it necessary to ask your daughter to cover up. Aside the indignity of the situation, it is very cold at the moment, and a gaping hole in a pair of trousers is not advisable for anyone!
