Broken Tumble dryer 6 days out of guarantee

Wonder if someone can point me in the right direction. My tumble dryer has stopped working and is 6 days past the one year retailer guarantee from Currys. I did not take out the extended warranty and am slightly kicking myself now! We paid cash so the section 75 thing will not apply.
Can I approach Currys and use the Sale of Goods Act as the tumble dryer can reasonably be assumed to last more than a year? How do I do this?
The dryer hasn't even been used very often and is a vented one which we thought would last longer than a condenser one - obviously wrong on that point!
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Try phoning the Curry's helpline first.

I had thought of doing that but will they not just tell me to go away as it is outside the warranty? I will try phoning in the morning; the helpline opens at 10am.:hello:0

you need to read up on the sale of goods act - yes i would expect a tumble dryer to last more than oen year
currys will probably offer to fix it but at a cost to you.
if you want to force them to do it free under soga then you will probably have to get your own person in to fix it (and state its a manfacturering fault) and then try and get currys to reimburse you.
if currys coem and fix it at a cost to you then it might be difficult to get them to reimburse the cost as it will be difficult to show it is a manufacturing fault unless they admit it.
i had a similar problem with a washing machine where the handle broke with comet. they charged me 50 quid to come out and fixed it - i argued with the engineer that the handle should have lasted longer but in the end i couldnt be bothered to pursue it.0 -

Almost right. The OP will need to get an engineer to produce a report to show it is an inherent fault. Then they will need to provide this to Currys to give them opportunity to provide a remedy.0 -

This report is only necessary if Currys claim the fault is down to misuse, or otherwise refuse to act. They may just accept that fault is inherent and thus no report will be needed.0 -

DO NOT DO THIS. Ring Currys, and follow their advice. You may need to get an engineer out to give you an independent report stating the fault is inherent, but then go back to Currys and let them offer you a remedy. They will most likely repair themselves, and you might have a real fight trying to get a reimbursement for an unauthorised repair!0 -
There is no necessity to obtain a so called expert report. simply contact them and elicit their response. Chances are they will blank you. If so ,write to customer services at GHQ. Be polite,firm and concise. I suspect they should offer to repair it at no cost to you. The end result,if they blank you is to give notice that you will seek redress via the civil courts. they will back out at that point and offer to help. If thy dont,then they are fools as they will likely loose. Of course it all hinges on make/model/price paid/perceived quality/useage pattern etc..Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..0

Nothing in the law says you have to give Currys a chance to repair as such - what you have to do is mitigate losses. What this effectivley means is give them a chance to fix as it will reduce costs and prevent you from getting a very expensive third party in
That said, dont let Currys give you the runaround and make you wait a long time.
Whilst in the perfect world we can all spend time and money obtaining reports you should not be put out for an unnecessarily long period. The advice to get a report is 'perfect world' advice that legal people will give to cover their own !!!!!!. The danger of going against it of course is that you might find the court does not favour you if you have to go to court to reclaim expenditure.
Therefore the call to Currys will be key to gauge how helpful they want to be. if they are going to insist on a totally non refundeable fee even if the product has a manufacturing fault i would suggest they are not being reasonable.
The key from your perspective is being sure it was a fault with the product when it was sold and not one of wear and tear or one which you have caused.0 -
