    If you call Tesco and ask them to switch you to a sim-only contract, they will do it and you will keep the number.

    If you buy a new contract through a third party (or even from Tesco), e.g. for the sake of cashback, then the only way to keep your number will be to port it our to some other network PAYG, then back to Tesco to the new contract.
