Not one of the posts mentions what I consider to be the daddy of free Android navigation software OSMAND. After trying most of the others and giving up in frustration this is the only one that does it for me. It is free if you restrict yourself to 10 map downloads or you pay approx £3 and can download as many as your device can hold. Upgrades are continual and all free so you pay nothing after the initial outlay. I currently have all UK and France regions on mine. The Maps are split into regions so you only need to download the ones you need. If you go somewhere else simply clear out the current maps and upload the new regions. This is great if you have limited storage space. ALL for free after the inital payment. The user interface is a little clumsy but once you work out how to use it, IT WORKS. The accuracy is excellent...better that my expensive Navigon. Satellite acquisition when first switched on can be a little slow but once it has got the fix it stays fixed. We are currently using it in France and it is spot on. I wouldn't be without it now.

I did wonder that, but what's written doesn't really sound like anything different to what others have written about other satnav apps.
  • I downloaded the route along the Moselle valley came across some road closure owing to resurfacing the app then took me through the diversion through a small village and over the hill back to the main valley with no problem.

I like Navfree/Navmii. I paid for the ad-free version - only a couple of quid. Seems to work well.

I had a bad experience with HERE (got lost in Rio de Janeiro - the maps, or at least the correspondence between the GPS location and the maps, looked completely wrong; the GPS was fine as NavFree worked). Not keen to use that again.

I have been using the Michelin Navigation and Traffic app recently, it uses TomTom maps, you do need to be online though. It got me around Birmingham OK but didn't allow for some closed roads. I do have a proper SatNav but it's easier and more convenient to use my phone.

With Navfree/Navmii you don't need to be online unless you want to utilise traffic updates and re-routing ... as a standalone satnav it works fine offline. (Which is a bonus for when you're overseas, so you don't get roaming data charges).

With the navfree app does it give the option to plan routes to say avoid toll roads/motorways etc.

Yes it does, in the Route Options section of Preferences. And it includes Avoid Traffic On Your Route as an option.
  • I downloaded navmi before coming on hoiday to Gemany - onto my iPad so it cost for the map of Germany and it has been useless! I may be doing something wrong but not once has it found where I am or want to go - absolutely hopeless. Think I'll stick with a map!
