You can get free OS maps (via Navmii) for most countries ... no need to have paid.

I'm going to Germany in September. If I remember I'll download the map and try it out.

I'm curently using google maps -seems to work well.

However IMO it's not a patch on Co-Pilot.

Lot changed in app updates etc, my (renewed) list/recommendations:
1- iGo Primo (not freeware, but best still)

2- Waze ("smoothed out" some dumbness of the past in adverts, search functions improved, still uses data on the go, but possible to turn off), unfortunately that would mean the very best feature- really effective now- traffic alertness would be turned off too. as well as great and expanding community.

3- HERE, truly off-line maps (dl'ed to your SD at home, by regions, no need to use data excessively), use only enhanced search functions via data (if must), good integration to majority Android variants for address search functions, else, pretty simple and basic interface, just good!

My ancient PDA with TomTom finallt expired a month or so ago. I no longer use satnav regularly exceptfor holsso a free app appealed. The newsletter mentioning Navmii came at a good time, the european mapping and no live data connection to use appealed

Lack of manual is a bit of a drawback as it's quite a bit different to TT but I managed to work it out ok and its eems to work fine so far

I am having a problem with European maps though when I go to download some it tells me to update the application but when I try to do so it says no update is available and you get in a loop of messages for several maps

France downloaded but not Benelux, Netherlands or Germany

I emailed their help contact 5 days ago but no reply so far
  • I tried Here because I had used Nokia maps previously and could not at that time use it on my Samsung. Downloaded and got the maps OK but the voice directions stopped after the first couple of turns. Tried uninstalling and reinstalling a couple of times but no luck, so contacted customer services who said get in touch with Samsung. What a cop out it was their app not Samsungs.
I now use Navigator or Navmii and as I travel Europe just download the relevant country as I need them before my journey and clear them when I get back. Each time I download the maps I get the latest.

They're all pretty gash because phones tend to have !!!! GPS antennas.

iGo is the best though, by far.
  • I had used Navfree in the past but switched to Here on my Nexus7 tablet for this year's trip to Belgium, France and Spain. I found it to be very good. There were at least 2 advantages -
    1. I found saving my addresses was much simpler
    2. You only need to download parts of countries whereas in Navfree you have to download whole countries.

And there had been some errors on Navfree for my local area (eg it told me to turn right on to my local Ring Road but there is only a left turn possible)! So I think Here is more accurate.
  • I agree with 'Orson Cart' despite him being slandered by a troll.
After trying many of the free apps I have found this one to be the most versatile and reliable. It could be said that a drawback is it relies on opensource maps but it is possible to download many others to use as alternatives. It is a lot clearer than Gmaps which insist on using various shades of grey and are often hard to make out. The opensource maps are better in some poorly mapped countries, for example Microsoft maps in Laos were complete fiction whereas OSM did quite well.

Yes OSM+ is pretty good. The fact that it relies on opensource maps is to me a benefit: as if (when) you find a mistake it is quite easy to update the master maps yourself and then a few days later the updated maps are available on your phone. Getting the likes of Google or Garmin or Bing to update their maps is not easy and IME takes months.
My postings reflect my lifetime's experience and my opinion. You are quite welcome to respond with your experiences and option, whether similar or different.
  • I downloaded maps for France and Belgium on my LG G2 so I could use the satnav offline without internet. It worked very well. I prefer it to Google Maps, which is also good.
