Is your driving licence out of date?

I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.

My photo expired in August 2011, and has been checked by the police twice since then with no issues. My husband's photo also expired around the same time. We have both also used the cards when hiring vehicles. Neither of us have received a penalty or a summons. I'm not aware that the DVLA has ever issued any penalties for expired photocards.

It's a shame that the story refers to licences expiring, when that is wrong. The licence and entitlement to drive are valid (with some exceptions) until your 70th birthday. The expiry of the photocard does not affect your entitlement to drive.

Reminds me of a piece from one of Bill Bryson's books, where he was using an expired drivers license as ID when boarding a flight (in the US). When told it had expired, he just said that's OK, he wasn't planning on flying the plane.

I still have my old green licence and I intend to keep it as long as I can.

It really flummoxed the young copper who stopped me a while back, he even tried to con me into replacing it as expired but no, that's not happened yet.

I can't see why all those people are driving around with an out-of-date licence when the DVLA state that they send out reminders. They certainly did when mine came up for renewal a couple of months ago.

I don't know why people are so against having photo card driving licences to be honest, people have passports with biometric data on them. This has a picture only

Only 2 more years, by 2015 a photo licence will be compulsory. I'll be waving goodbye to my old style pink licence.

I renewed mine online on Tuesday. The replacements dropped through the letter box this morning. That's quite an impressive turnaround.

It's the paper counterpart of the photo licence that is planned to be phased out by 2015.

Compulsory replacement for the old style paper licence is planned, but they haven't set a date yet.

Because it is a money-making scam? My licence is valid until I reach 70, it was a one-off purchase. When the photo licences came out the DVLA did warn that the photo ID part of the new licence would require updating every 10 years, but at no time stated this would = the cost of a standard licence at each renewal, meaning the licence cost increased more than 500% (assuming the renewal costs increased, which they did).
