Urgent help . Victim of scam

Hi there I have recently been a victim of a scam.

I saw a listing of an iPhone 5 on cregs list website
london.craigslist. co. uk/mob/3432867460

And I contacted the seller directly via text , he was very friendly and told me that he is selling me the phone for £240 but I can pay £120 upfront and pay the rest later , was very excited and he told me to transfer the money and he provided me with all of his bank details (he had an account with bank of Scotland) . So I had transfer the money to his account via my Barclays account using the machines inside one of the branches and now the phone still has not arrived.

Where do I report this?
Is there a chance I can get my money back ?

    The Police Station.
    Very little chance if any.
  • Phone your bank ASAP, they may be able to stop the payment going through depending on what time it was done. I worked for a bank and it was sometimes possible

    Faster Payments cannot be recalled.

This is exactly the reason why craigslist have the following at the top of each page -
Avoid scams and fraud by dealing locally! Beware any deal involving Western Union, Moneygram, wire transfer, cashier check, money order, shipping, escrow, or any promise of transaction protection/certification/guarantee

Unfortunately, there is very little chance of getting your money back.

Even though there is a papertrail for where the money went (unlike Western Union/Moneygram etc), banks do not usually reverse transfers like this.

I am afraid you have lost your money to the fraudster... There is hardly anything you can do as you have paid via faster bank transfer. How on the earth you let others fool you like this! Take it is as you learned lessons and just move on... All I can say is try to avoid same mistakes in the future.

Not a chance money has gone.

OP's only option is to report to police and hope that they are prepared to follow through.
I take it you got a address and checked it was a real address?

You could contact the bank and see if they will report the account to RBS as a fraudlent. If RBS get a few reports they will close the account down.

They cannot be 'recalled'. However if you tell your bank they can contact the other bank. If the funds have not been withdrawn they can be put on hold pending the outcome of a police investigation.

Whether the other bank is willing to do this depends on how confident they are that a fraud has taken place.

It is possible that they look at the account, see a lot of odd payments, see that the payments do not match normal behaviour of that type of customer and freeze the account.

Remember that banks can be fined for allowing criminals to pass money though them and therefore it will be in their interest (if they believe that a fraud has taken place) to investigate.
