if you startup in safe mode what does the screen look like!!
> . !!!! ----> .0 -
the same - there is clearly the same black line down the right hand side (the start bar ends in the same place. icons are bigger and not as clear.0
-
and a border at the bottom?
in the picture, there appears to be a blue splodge below the start button, in the black border, but it's not clear, is that what you can see?!!

yep grey border at the bottom. yeah, in normal mode the start button has a blue splodge under it, that's not normal - that appeared when the screen went wrong.0

Looking more like a hardware problem, try these in order
remove the kindle cable.
reboot, go into bios to see if it goes full screen
go into the advanced properties of your graphics card (right click on desktop), and try all resolution/refresh rate/scaling options
try applying a firm pinch/squeeze/twist to the edges of the screen (not the screen itself, the plastic surround, all around the edge.)
press the function key that switches external screen output several times to see if anything changes.
try a system restore to rule out software
if that doesn't work, it could possibly be a loose or faulty video cable, which would mean taking it apart.
apply firm but not heavy pressure all over the keyboard area
failing that you could do a factory restore (but would need to backup any data first)
after that, new screen possibly
are the hinges ok, and no overheating problems?!!

ok doke, I'll give that all a go tomorrow. I tried a system restore, that didn't work, saying that it didn't take me back very far, I'm not sure if you can decide the date.
when you do a factory restore does that wipe things like word etc or is it just saved documents? I wouldn't know where to start with backing everything up, with the exception of files that can go on a usb.
Thanks to everyone for all you help by the way - really appreciate it.

The splodge, and the fact that the video isn't centered points away from a software/driver/resolution problem
has the dog been near the laptop?
factory restore is last resort, try the bezel pinch/twist first
factory restore takes it back to how it was when delivered, you should also create the acer recovery disks using erecovery beforehand.
There's a video on how to backup, and links to free software to do it at the bottom of this https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/2436849
but you will need a usb hard disk big enough!!

Now you mention it - I was playing a game the other day before it went all wrong - and that crashed. No power cuts though.

I think this may be the cause. What game? How do I add a signature?0 -
hey - the pinching, twisting thing didn't work. the dogs, as far as I know haven't been near it.
the game was pkr running on the "lite" version - I've uninstalled that now because I thought that might have done something but that's made no difference either.
at least the computer still works - frustrating though!0
