;58657487]Not a fan of private plates then?

Appreciate things like this have to be paid for but I find some of the fees a little excessive - £105 for the DVLA. Then £30 for someone to edit a document at the insurance company.

If you buy a car off someone with plate on then it becomes yours it seems. Pretty much got to sort it out beforehand which is what I'm doing now.

Same with me - I'd tell them to sort off and get the plate sorted first.
I'm not against private plates. I just don't see the point in them when you have to pay all the associated fees. Great if you have the money spare.

Whatever you decide make sure the plate is legal.

When private plates were cheap, I thought it would be a hoot to have H12 XYZ and speced it to read Hi 2 XYZ. XYZ being my initials. Three days later I got pulled by the police.

The times quoted for transfer may be on the long side...

I bought a car just before Xmas, which had a private plate on that the owner wanted to keep.
Saw the car on 15th, picked it up on 19th. Between those dates the owner sent the plate transfer paperwork.
I got the transfer certificate on the 28th, and the V5 back [STRIKE]this [/STRIKE] last week.
• Got tax disc, MOT etc for car back already - 3 days. And letter allowing me to get plates sorted. Great.

I understand the new V5 takes 4 weeks but how long before I get the retention certificate back?

I want to put this on new car now. (Yes, I know it would have been easier to do transfer for £80 but I hadnt bought car).
