Private reg - selling car

Confused about how this works.
I understand its hassle and that you pretty much need to get the reg sorted before you sell the car. Trouble is I dont yet know which car I'm going to transfer it onto.
I see its £80 to transfer the plate to another vehicle or £105 to retain it for the year. Question is though if I choose to retain it, is there another fee to assign this to a new vehicle when I get one?
Otherwise, basically, it means having to buy new car, then wait 4-6 weeks for transfer to take place before I can sell old car. Not cool.
If its the difference between £80 and £105 then not an issue. Only hassle I guess is when the transfer is done that potentially I'd have to tell insurance company that reg had changed (and they might charge!).

Its only £25..... so if its worth keeping then isn't it worth stumping up the extra? If not let it go with the car?0

The £105 includes the £80 transfer fee.
So, take if off the car and pay £105. Then within the year, you can transfer it to another car at no additional cost.
If a year passes and you did not manage to put it on a new car, then you have the choice to pay £25 to retain the plate for another year. If you do this, then decide to put it on a car in the 2nd year, then again it will be free (as you have already paid the £80 transfer fee).
Hope that makes sense and helps.:)
And on the note of insurance companies charging; I guess it depends on the company. I recently changed cars and told Admiral about the change and they were pretty good about it. They said to call back within 2 weeks once I get the DVLA confirmation and they will change it over for free. Annoyingly DVLA lost the paperwork and it took 5 weeks, but when I did call back, I explained this and they still did it for free. Happy days!0 -
Yeh. Just found think it is only £105 one off.
Annoying thing is it takes so long and you can't sell the car until its done.
Also, in the meantime, am I right in saying you have to send tax disk off? Does this mean you have to drive around with no tax disk?0 -
No you don't send the tax disc. You just give them the serial number.
You'll get a new task disc, MOT and log book in the post. What if there was no such thing as a rhetorical question?0 -

why dont you look on the dvla web site it shows all the info you need0

Yes. Found a lot on info on DVLA site. Deffo is hassle mind having a private reg.
Looks like best option for me is to pay the £105 and get the certificate (only £25 more) which leaves me a bit of slack.
I see after 2 weeks you get a letter saying its been sorted but that it takes a further 4-6weeks before you get a changed V5 and the actual certificate back. Still cant sell car I guess until you get V5?
At what point though is the new reg live? After 2 weeks I guess. Surely at some point theres a cutover? For instance, reg plates and insurance etc purposes.
Also, any benefit of taking stuff to DVLA office at all? Will this shorten initial 2 weeks?0 -
Nothing really shortens the process, and assuming your local office hasn't shut down - it is still Swansea who prints the replacement V5C. If this is the first time you have transferred, you may be called in for a VIN inspection - which is why you you need to retain access to the vehicle.
However, I have had mine for 40 years and only had it inspected in 1976, and they've rubber stamped subsequent transfers with no inspection.0 -
Never had to wait more than 2 weeks for the new V5C. Don't know why anyone goes on about 4-6 weeks.0
