Private reg - selling car

  • Well, dropped the app form in myself to DVLA.

Good to see it doesnt take 4-6 weeks.

Definitely need to read the website next time before planning to sell a car with a plate you want to keep.

Never had to wait more than 2 weeks for the new V5C. Don't know why anyone goes on about 4-6 weeks.

Because that's what it takes them? Only once did I get it in a fortnight, and that was via my local office. By post to Swansea, my worst was 5 weeks.

Surprised you've never heard of the complaints regarding treacle-like admin. Just because you've not experienced it doesn't mean it never happened!

You must be unlucky. I have lost count of the number of times I have transferred a plate. Last time took 9 days max.

    Be happy...;)
  • Just though of something. OK so DVLA will send me a letter back shortly. Assume at this point car has now reverted to (probably) previous plate.

At this point, I've now got wrong reg no for insurance and wrong physical plates on car. Surely there is the need for some form of cutover here? Or is it considered acceptable for there to be some period for both insurance/plate purposes?

Same when you decide to put saved reg no onto another car?
  • Another thing.
Wife has just got new car and plans to put the private reg onto this.

I've got to phone the insurance anyway to switch over to new car (shes got her own car shes planning to sell) which is going to cost £30 admin fees (cheers Budget bit excessive).

But then in a few weeks if I put the private plate on I've got to ring them again. Even though its the same car the reg has changed so I guess they're going to knock me for £30 again?

Or do most insurers not charge because its the same car?

I've begun to realise that even though companies like budget come out cheapest they seem to claw the money back with excessive admin fees if you ever change anything. For instance, I know Admiral charge £12 or something like that for a change and I'm sure, in the past, Tesco insurance did it for free?

When you do swap it over, it might be a good idea to carry a copy of your insurance certificate as it takes a while for the MID to update.
  • If you can't afford the fees, then don't have a private plate.

If I'm buying a second hand car off someone who wants to keep the plate but hasn't already took it off, then I walk away. I don't have time to mess about changing plates and insurance docs after I have just bought a car.

Not a fan of private plates then?

Appreciate things like this have to be paid for but I find some of the fees a little excessive - £105 for the DVLA. Then £30 for someone to edit a document at the insurance company.

If you buy a car off someone with plate on then it becomes yours it seems. Pretty much got to sort it out beforehand which is what I'm doing now.

Same with me - I'd tell them to sort off and get the plate sorted first.
