I was thinking the same. Great post if the OP wanted a two seater sports car.
....
how old are the kids though? Do you need to be able to put them in car seats in the back for example?
That was the point!
If they're teenagers and her OH has a 4 seater then it's a consideration. Depreciation will be probably very low given her milage as they stopped production in 2009 and the new one due to be released will lave a gap for a few years. (And on less than 4k a year milage)
Its just a option to consider for the OP....
On:
Taking the under 4k a year into consideration ... this doesn't necessarily make financial sense. Sub 100 tax means either tiny engine or diesel and modern diesel with DPF isn't going to like 4k a year! The new or near new 1.2 or 1.4 will depreciate like nobodies business. Will have a think the £100 tax bracket is a bit of a interesting element though and should narrow the search down.
MPG ... not that important over 4k a year? Why not save 3k on the purchase and this will more than pay for the difference in fuel?
Hence a low depreciation car would seem to offer more financial positives than a higher depreciation, low tax and high MPG alternative (without even taking into account how nice the car is to drive)0 -
Just to let you all know my kids are teenagers, so I don't need car seats, but I do need to be able to fit them in the car at times so I need 4 seats, ok a bit of tight fit in the back but they'll live! ( and eldest will be driving next year and youngest in 3 years )
:-):money: I will never be rich but I'm happy :rotfl:0 -
Audi A4 or BMW E46 3 Series convertible.
4 seats, cabriolet, with the right engine can be considered economical.

Why not a E90? (or E92?)

Not sure of the E92 can be stretched to be 'girly'?0 -

Steve, you make some excellent, well thought out and in depth posts, just admit on this occasion you missed the 4 seat requirement. No one thinks any less of you!
As for cheap tax/insurance and something the oldest one might have a shot of insuring next year then the Fiat 500 open top mentioned earlier is probably the one to go for. Doesn't get more girlie than this

Mini convertible? Im not a huge fan but reliable, cheap to run and very girly! Also have got 4 seats when needed!! If you go for the diesel version will be good plus you can get mini service plans with a lot of second hand ones as people sometimes take the 5 year plan! So cheap insurance, cheap tax and free servicing for at least 3 years!! They must do about 50MPG!0

Certainly an option. Not sure what they are going for at the moment. Is 10k enough to bag a good one?
The (dis)advantage (depnds how you look at it) of the the E92 over the E46 is that it has a metal folding roof rather than cloth. Worth thinking about
Other option is a Merc CLK cabriolet.0 -

£100 road tax as asked for by the OP?
sam, the OP had a mini but I wouldn't go for a diesel on 4000 miles a year. You'll never get the money back and could be opening up a whole load of problems. What if there was no such thing as a rhetorical question?0 -

She can treat herself!
If I'm sticking 10k down on a car, I'm unlikely to be bothered if the VED is 100 or £300.
FWIW a mid 00s 330Ci cabrio is £270 on the VED front which isn't too terrible. Plus very nice examples can be picked up for 5-7k.0
