Thanks for that link , didn't know there was a list on the net. I assumed it was going to be someone like Halfords but there are several places much more locally. It is however somewhat out of date as the local garage I use (must get that oil leak looked at) moved several years ago and another closed down several years ago that is still listed.

And that's his get-out clause.. He's selling them as show plates and asking you nicely not to use them on the road.

You receive a perfectly legal set of plates that comply with all the laws and are just fine to use on the road.

It's a silly law. It's not like car cloners buy their plates off eBay anyway.

Yes, he can be found on that link.

His listings have the disclaimer :-

All plates unless specifically requested (documentation required) are sold as "show use" and/or "off road use" and therefore we cannot be held responsible for illegal use of these plates on the road, by choosing "buy it now" you are agreeing to these terms and conditions of sale, We cannot be held responsible for any fines or convictions resulting from using these plates for any purpose but for the one for which they were designed

So I guess you can "specifically request" and do whatever you want.

That is the one. I checked the ad before posting and hadn't seen the TINY script hidden at bottom of the page. Oh well I am running 3 vehicles with illegal plates.....

Many years ago I bought my son a cherished plate FE 8455...
Is FE 8455 cherished because it is an old number or am I missing what word or words it appears to spell?

    Are your son's initials FE?
  • FE 8455, end of.

Nice plate btw. Very old school, unlike some of the monstrosoties you see nowadays on Corsas and the like. :)

Methinks he is playing on a grey area. Selling road legal plates without doing the necessary checks by claiming they are show plates.

I suppose if the police were really pedantic then they could prosecute anybody with his plates on as they are show plates (assuming they identified somebody as one of his internet buyers)

Not if the plates comply with regulations they couldn't.

The seller's on dodgy ground - he could lose his authorised supplier status - but anyone who buys the plates is fine as long as they're road legal (and correct for the car, of course!)

As the owner / driver your responsibility is to use road legal plates, any offences committed by the supplier aren't your concern.

Incidentally, the only approved layout is FE 8455* (or the same split over 2 lines with letters on one, numbers on the other if that's all the car's plate area will fit). Suggest the garage gets a grip on the regs - if they're an approved supplier they should know this!

    * if, as someone suggested earlier, the number is actually FEB 455, then the garage is right.

If I understand the legislation correctly then even though the number plate meets the requirements as far as layout etc it is still a non-compliant number plate because the relevant checks of V5/proof have not been undertaken. Therefore they should not be used on a road going vehicle. Both the supplier and the customer are liable.

2 completely different areas of law.

As far as the owner / driver is concerned the plate on the car must conform to The Road Vehicles (Display of Registration Marks) Regulations 2001 which is basically construction and use and these plates undoubtedly will.

The licensing and operation of manufacturers is covered by Vehicles Crime (Registration of Registration Plate Suppliers) (England and Wales) Regulations 2002 (SI 2002 no 2977), Vehicles Crime (Registration of Registration Plate Suppliers) (England and Wales) (Amendment) Regulations 2005 (SI 2005 no 2981), Part 2 of the Vehicles (Crime) Act 2001 and The Road Safety Act 2006 which state the steps a supplier must take to ensure the legitimacy of the plate being supplied and makes it an offence to supply plates not conforming to the Disp of Reg Marks Regs and British Standard (section 45).
