Install to another drive if possible as anything you install on the drive with the data now could overwrite the data you are hoping to recover

    Hope it goes well.

Lesson 1 with any file copying, always copy and paste, not cut and paste, files from 1 source to another and check they are there before deleting the original files!

Doesnt help I know but remember to save future upset?

Have you tried a search of all media files to see if they have just been dropped elsewhere in the system?

Also try an ISO search in case they are where you put them but the format is incorrect to be opened?
(ISO BUSTER IS A FREE PRGRAMME THAT MAY FIND AND REFORMAT THE FILES)

I would also recommend for the future that you use a file converter to convert files from differing sources to a popular standard format, mobiles tend to use many differing formats that may not be compatable for reading on other systems!

    Just on the off chance!

I used to have a sans-disk usb memory stick do this on occasion, I found that if I did a safely remove disk the unplug it, wait ten seconds then plug it back in, the files would be there, something about not auto refreshing.

And TestDisk from the same source, quite often it may just be a disk that has not been cleanly unmounted/pulled out.

Assuming you haven't disconnected the USB stick this whole time, does anything useful happen if you open the target folder there, and Refresh the view of that folder? Press F5 or select Refresh from menu options?

As suggested above, search the whole of your system for all files of the media type concerned, in case they've been dropped to another folder.

    DizzyLisa,

Unless you are quite proficient with computers you could make the problem worse when trying to recover your files.

When you delete a file all you actually do is tell windows that the area of the hard disk that held your files is now available to be used for storing new files. Until windows overwrites that area your files should be available to be recovered.

Just by using your PC you can overwrite these areas. I suggest you turn off the PC immeadiatley. Take it to a technician and ask them to make an image of the hard disk BEFORE they do anything else. Once there is an image available they can then try various methods of data recovery safe in the knowledge that they can return to the current situation if the recovery fails.

This will obviously involve a cost to you but how much are the files worth to you?

Situations like this always frustrate me that so many people are unaware of the importance of regular verified backups of valuable data.

I hope you find a good tech who can help you out.

^^ I agree with the above...

If the photos are important, I'd be tempted to contact a data recovery specialist (not just a general PC repair shop, and most definitely not somewhere like PC World)...

It's a good idea to have at least two separate backups, so maybe worth investing in a couple of external hard drives for future use...?

Hope you manage to get the pictures back...
