How much longer would you wait?

I bought an item on the 21st Dec. Private seller, £5 postage listed as 48 hour courier.

I know it's been Christmas etc, but the item hasn't arrived yet and the seller hasn't updated the dispatched date.

I contacted them on the 2nd Jan, simply asking when the item would be posted.

They responded that day, explaining that they were currently away til the following evening, but would check then to see if anything had been returned to them.

I've sent a couple of replies since, first was immediately after the reply I received (so, still Jan 2nd), asking what date it was posted, who the courier was and if there was a tracking number. The 2nd reply I sent on the 5th Jan asking for an update. No reply.

The seller has 100% feedback and seems to be a casual user as they don't sell too often. I don't believe they're out to scam me.

However, how long would you give before sending another reply to the seller, and how long would you wait for the item to arrive before opening an INR?

If the item has been sent by yodel or myhermes then I have a feeling I could be waiting a while :(

What was the dispatch time and estimated delivery date given by Ebay?
  • "Usually dispatched within 2 working days of cleared payment"

    Ebay's estimation was December 31st - January 2nd.

Well in light of the emails you have sent and it is now overdue, I would open but not escalate an INR with Paypal. Don't let it divert you to Ebay.

Wait 24 hours and then escalate if no response.
  • Ok thanks. Just out of interest, why do you advise paypal over ebay?

I know that once you choose one, you can't change to the other.

Paypal are quicker to sort. Unless your item is counterfeit or you are angling for returns postage to be paid, then Paypal are better.

I'd also get the dispute open now, it has been long enough especially as seller is ignoring you.

  • Thank you. It'd be a shame if it doesn't turn up, was something I really wanted! Isn't it always the way.. :(
  • I decided to hold on another couple of days. On the evening of the 9th, the seller replied to me, apologised for lack of comms due to being away from the net a couple of days, and saying that the item had been returned to them, due to a damaged address label.

They're re-sent it and so it should be arriving today, fingers crossed. Someone's normally around during the day so I may have good news to share when I get home from work!

Sorry but that sounds like a white lie to me.

I've had 2 packets returned to me this week from Royal Mail, both saying packet damaged, they found my details inside. Shame they didn't think of actually delivering it instead. Now it looks like I've not posted originally and could be accused of telling a 'white lie'. I'm not and now feel that I need to put a copy of the RM correspondence in the parcel even though I do get a COP when posting.
