Charities don't get any donations if they don't ask for them.

Whilst I understand that. I rarely give to charities who can afford extravagant adverts & have highly paid staff & expenses, regardless of what charity this is.

    I find it off putting.

Charities are more often than not given donations because they are personal to the giver. I choose to donate to Marie Curie and Douglas MacMillan based on the fact they helped me nurse my late Dad through the final stages of lung cancer. I give to Help for Heroes as many of my OH's family were in the armed services.

A lot of people donate in that way I imagine, through personal experience and would donate whether the charity actively asked for the donation or not.

I suppose its a little different with the likes of Oxfam as famine doesn't touch many lives in the UK, but certainly with cancer charities they will get the donations regardless of advertising.
  • I've not seen it, but can't resist my pet moan- the one for tigers (I think) where the woman keeps saying 'medsin' instead of medicine. I expect someone will tell me off now and say that where they live, everyone says 'medsin' but it infuriates me! Like Supernanny saying 'asseptable'!
  • londonsurrey- same here :( I actually stopped giving to oxfam thru the bank because of the constant guilt tripping to make me give more. Might've been less annoying if I hadn't been on benefits myself and so going without a little luxury each week to donate.

Perhaps they could spend the money on encouraging contraception which I'm reasonably sure would make an enormous difference to the third world.

Some of the african countries are catholic though, and you know the catholic church frown upon contraception, although I agree with your comment.

Oxfam actually do a lot of work on empowering women:

tbh I do find her 'whiny'...sure she's a lovely lady and it is advertising a good cause...but her voice really grates on me and her whole tone seems patronising and condescending...could just be me?

    This.

It's like she's talking to a toddler. Just like any ads selling baby stuff, or cleaning stuff, or in fact most things now!

The ad trend that annoys me greatly at the moment is for voiceover actors who are nasaly. Drives me nuts. HSBC are the worst for it but I have to mute the TV. I just want them to blow their bloody noses!!
